Default What ford engine(kit car)

hi guys thinking of building a kitcar soon and would like the engine and running gear to be ford based, my problem is that i would like a relitivley cheap rwd engine, was thinking about V6 cosworth as its fairly cheap and already rwd and looking into things to rwd a zetec would cost a fair bit? Would it be worth my while getting a doner car(scorpio cosworth) and just taking running gear engine, gearbox and axle ect out? anyone done this before using a v6 cosworth engine gearbox and running gear in a kit car or would it just be too heavy? seen it in one or 2 kit cars but not too much info bout them.

Thanks guys

Depends on your budget, what can you strech too? If you can, but a BDA in it, or being more realistic, CVH engines have been popular, as have xflows, pintos, zetecs, etc. I'd get a zetec, convert it to type 9 box and fit some bike carbds. Plenty info out there on how to do the conversion. Don't fprget to show us some picks with whatever you decide

I'd go zetec as well to be honest and pretty easy to RWD.

Forget the v6 cossie lump but the donor will be perfect. Get one will four stud hubs sell the engine and box and buy a new create zetec and a mt75 box. That way you can keep the donor registrations. The v6 is to heavy and your need a custom plenum, manifold x2, 2x exhausts etc etc.

Porkies westfield looks driveable? You must be kidding mate it looks an absolute animal to drive! Ive seen the vids and saw the car at a trackday i was on and he is obviously a very experienced driver. Fantastic car though looked like everything had been built to be as good as possible with no expense spared.

A tuned Zetec is your best option on 45's or bodies, very tunable units aspirated....

It is actually very driveable. It only goes as fast as you want it too and is perfectly happy pootling to the shops with Lees mum behind the wheel! We built it to be a good all rounder on road and track. It does both very well.

Of course if you press the loud pedal (like Lee likes too) then it will go like a ballistic missile!

id say get a zetec or cvh lump in there and run it on carbs both them engines seem to give you your moneys worth if you do decide on some power upgrades in the future unlike a pinto imo, ive got a complete sierra 2wd rear drum brake axle propshaft and type 9 gearbox here if you want it, just come out my sierra as im changing it all over to cosworth, only thing id want a few quid for is the gearbox

Yes usable I've been in it round silverstone with him and to say you would expect something like that with all the power would be all over... Well that's not the case it handles and stops very very well... Ask mike rainbird aswell because he went in it after me... It's a proper tool... And a credit to lee for being a very
Good driver .

Fair enough obviously some serious money has gone into making it all work as well as possible. Was more meaning it looks like you would need to be a very good driver to get the most out of it as it looks a right handful.

Both those statements are about as close to the mark as you are gonna get.

Between the 2 cars there has been a serious amount of development and trying stuff over the years too!

for ease of use go pinto and type nine to start off then when the platform is built up to the standard you like ie brakes suspension weighting geometry go yb at a later date.

Yes Doug, sold it 3 weeks back. Fitted a fresh long rod engine too for the new owner.

Just didn't get time to use it and prefer the Lotus I've put together. Was a shame to see it go but it's still in the UK and the guy plans to do some competitions in it. He did a track day 72 hours after buying it!!!

Had my fair share of fun in it and learnt lots over the years.

Honest question, why does it need to be Ford based?

You limit yourself massively by not having many RWD layouts to choose from.

thanks for all th replys guys, ye that was my main concern that the st lump would be a bit big and heavy, something lights and high revving would be ideal, probs look into a zetec with carbs for the time being? also what gearbox would be better? type 9? or mt75? im thinking mt75 as its newer and would take a bit more thrashing? but might be wrong? thinking along the lines of a locust based kit,and the reason for choosing a ford is just for the simple reason that they are cheap and reliable and fairly tune able and easy to get parts, had a look into getting different rwd engines but most of them are either to expensive or too heavy? u have any ideas in mind? also any thoughts on using a rs2000 engine?? sorry for all the questions but just dont want to end up with problems further up the line

Why go for Zetec over Duratec? Zetecs may be a bit cheaper I suppose but its a heavier and somewhat less tunable engine...
