Default roll cage-welding in the spread plates help

morning all. Im going for 5mm as i can get it on the cheap. The very front ones and middle ones do i weld the plate under the floor of the car?

The rear plate that sits on the suspension turrets is it easy to get access underneath to weld a plate or do u weld it on the side u can visibly see from the car?

Cheers.

When my dad welded in my 6 point cage, he double skinned on the inside, then welded the mounting plate on the double skin on the inside. It worked but was hell to get in. And he didnt weld the rear arch plates, He bolted them and they were ok but bent the two skins together. Hope this helped a little.

usually a box section is made and welded into the car, and then the cage tube is welded to that

The more area the box can cover the better. Simple as that really. But obviously you dont want it to intrude into driver space more than necessary either.

i just got told to make it 5mm bigger each side than the actual bit u bolt down on the cage itself. Eg, the plate attached to the cage is 100mm by 30mm so i'd cut a section of 4mm metal to 110mm by 40mm.

This is obviously 5mm extra each side, is that enough??

Although what I said...doesnt take into account if there are any specific rules.

Dont forget though, a box is better than a simple flat plate. A flat plate only mates up with the floor area. A box mates up with the floor, sill etc so is much stronger as has a larger contact area with the car. There isnt much reason for it to be a lot bigger than the actual contact patch of a bolt in cage, so +5mm shouldnt be a problem, and will obviously be a lot bigger than the actual bar diameter.

not the best pic, but you can see here that the leg of the cage is bolted to a 'box' that has been welded into the floor and sill of the car

the strongest way is to make a box like this but do not weld the lid on yet

see how my cage is really low

tack the main cage together & to the box,s.
once you have welded as much of the main cage as possible cut the tack welds holding the cage to the box lids remove the box lids that were tacked on .then lower cage into box,s this will give you the room to fully weld the main cage around the top of cage lift back up weld lids on then fully weld cage to box lids.
