i just got told to make it 5mm bigger each side than the actual bit u bolt down on the cage itself. Eg, the plate attached to the cage is 100mm by 30mm so i'd cut a section of 4mm metal to 110mm by 40mm.

This is obviously 5mm extra each side, is that enough??
