Yup, when you consider what a cossie costs and you could have that instead sitting in your garage, not knocking M3 E46's either but I'd take the M5 any day of the week. I'm not an E60 M5 fan but they are stinking cheap now too, can be had for 15/16k, but 12mpg and very expensive to fix.

I have been looking e60 m5s myself, but then looked more closely at the M6 aswell, its smaller, lighter and has a carbon fibre roof.

I can get a 2006 M6 with 70k on for about £14.5k so have been tempted since they are alot more modern, my concern is if i have a gearbox issue as im a trader so cant just send it to bmw under warranty and might end up with a £3k or something scary.

Least with a e39 m5 you can pretty much fix everything that can go wrong as they arnt all that complex

March 2001 for tax increase, or it was when I bought mine.
You can get late 2000 models that are facelift editions that get you into the lower tax band, one of the reasons I bought mine, it was registered in Nov 2000 but it's a facelift car, the accepted rule is facelift is from 2001- onwards but you do get some earlier examples like me if you're lucky.
As for insurance no idea, but I had mine insured through my Mrs and I renewed it last week, fully comp on a regular policy for 268 for the year They're only expensive to put fuel in and tyres on (245/40/18 Front & 275/35/18 Rear), the rest is reasonable.

whats your day to day mpg,I had a 540i for around six months and the computer was normally around 12mpg and somedays when off work I could put £50 a day in it,it did 49mph in 1st gear though

12mpg average???? I've no idea on 540i fuel cosumption so maybe thats right?
Mine's sitting at 17.8 mg average has been for ages, lowest it's ever been is 16 ish average. My daily commute is 25 miles round trip, i use it everday, and that coupled with the odd use at night will see you about 80 quid/week easily. I got offered a nice E60 the other week, although they're brilliant cars for the money I'm not a fan, and when I got told it does 12mpg average I immediately crossed that one off the list, and thats coming from owning an M5 already!!!! Great cars for the money and not that expensive to maintain unlike the newer generation cars.

Oops thats not good, and thats with a claim at her fault last year and we're both 32 as well!
Nothing fancy insurance wise just got one through 1st Central from compare the market online. Car crime where I live is very low by comparison perhaps, I don't know anyone in my life even in a wide circle of friends and acquaintances thats ever had there car nicked, pretty weird actually!

sorry just bring this back up, re tax , whats the co2 for them,

as pre March 1st 2001 tax will cost £220 per year,

but really want to confirm, what it would cost per year if i didnt get a pre 01/03/2001 car, i think it falls into K? as still before march 2006 , so £270, which aint to sad, if it means buying the right later car.

Sorry to drag this back up but a quick question to those that own or have owned E39 M5's....

What sort of average yearly budget do you reckon you need to keep one in good health? Assuming you dont mind spannering yourself....

I know its always a gamble as there could be an underlying expensive fault but generally Tyres, fluids, servicing, known faults etc? Not including insurance and tax as obviously they vary on circumstance/ year respectively.

Hmmm good question, I'm thinking 1500-2000 quid but thats just an out of thin air guess, I'll have to have a good think and get back to you, things like tyres you don't replace every year so you'd have to take that cost and divide it by two for example if you were going to do it every other year. Servicing again is not that expensive and is not annual, you get oil, Inspection 1 & 2 which is in a cycle so you'd have to take the average.
The more you have set aside the better though, IMO you can never predic anything, i just paid 1k for a clutch/flywheel replacement, tyres not that long ago at 650, will need an mot next month, so likely there will be something a miss, so thats probably 2k total so far this year.

Thats sort of what I'd expected - was looking at Boxsters (for my wife) a while back and people seemed to reckon keep 2k aside per year to ensure your on top of it, and I'd guess the M5 would be in a similar expense bracket.

Clutch AND fly? are they dual mass?

Yes, It's a mare to take all the bits off so as a matter of course I replaced the flywheel as well, some say it's necessary but others don't but at 200 quid it's worth it while in bits.

I also replaced the leaking rear diff seal (they're bad for those), diff oil, drop links, centre prop bearing and rear main seal on the engine/sump. The exhaust is in one piece (if it has't been modified) and is extremely heavy (2 person job) so basically anything that invloves its removal should be taken advantage of, you don't want to be whipping that bad boy off at all, let alone when you've had the chance to replace something earlier and not done it.

Epic car though!

I have decided to get a 2000 model to save on road tax but then mine has a new facelift spec engine and vanos fitted under bmw warranty so the engine is running mint, made a real 399.7bhp and 385ft/lb of torque stock.

Though i dont use it much at the moment so it spends most of the time in the garage hence ive put it up for sale, i also bought a new clutch for it, and put new suspension on it, grips like nothing else.
