Xr4x4 front hubs

i never had a problem selling ABS XR4x4 ones for cosworth cars,
not saying im right but surely hubs cannot be different geometry wise, ARB, TCA and racks are the same, strut dimensions are the same (except escos spring seat is different)
anyone else got ideas on this?

it's all about the caliper lugs being in the wrong place
everything else will fit if you can get some after market brakes to clear
the other issue you may run into is the driveshaft angle when on full lock, which may explain why they are offset the way they are
shocks and bottom arms and steering are all the same fitment

Heres a pic of the two hubs on top of each other
top one is 4x4
bottom one is xr 4x4
Here you can see the difference on the steering arms

Heres a side view and you can see the differnce in the angle that the shock is held and the difference between the hub and centre line of the shock

Hope this helps

Very interesting!
i had about 20 pairs of unknown 4x4 ABS hubs, must have all been cosworth except 2 that came back for caliper fitting problems.
wonder if 2.0 and V6 XR4x4 are different too because i had 2 v6 xr4x4 estates and a hatch 2.9 GLsi 4x4 that was (the same) -40mm struts and springs on the front and all caught with snowflakes on the o/s/f wheelarch under heavy braking on lock,
But the 2.0 Xr4x4 and saff ghias didnt!
Excelent pic showing whats what
p.s was that a V6 or 2.0 XR4x4 hub? Wizzi?
Jonesy, with the geometry differences i would not use anything other than a propper cosworth hub after seeing the pictures!

All none cosworth Sierra 4x4 hubs are the same. They have a 15mm+ wider track each side than the cosworth 4x4.
They will fit in place of a cosworth one but as said different caliper mounts, smaller hole and closer to the disc.
The drive shaft length is also different to match the wider track.
So the two types can not be swapped without changing lots of parts.

the dohc later spec ones are different again
the differnt steering lugs are all for the same reason as the different lug mounts for the brakes, the cossie hub sits further in the arch and uses shorter shafts and wider wheels so all this is taken into consideration which is why they have so many small differences

lower arms are the same fitment as are the shocks and the steering, the steering is just in a different place to clear the bigger brakes and the shallower offset
everythign fits, it's just in a slightly different position so you may have other issues later on

Just read this thread with great interest. I am building a car where I need to find a hub to suit my vehicles dimensions rather than sourcing the correct one for a particular model.
The issue of drive shaft length and position of the hub face was one I never knew existed.
Looking at the info, I got the feeling that the consensus was that the Cosworth 4x4 hubs are narrower than the XR4x4 ones. Looking at the various images it looks to me that the Cosworth ones are wider- looking at the distance between the lower ball joint and outer hub face.
Can you guys confirm that my theory is right or wrong. Can someone put a tape measure to them?
It sort of makes sense that the Cosworth set-up would give increased track... I assume the strut angle inclination for both XR and Cos are the same?
Thanks.

not sure to be honest mate, i've got a 909 book somewhere and one of them "how to prepare a sierra for motorsport" in the loft too which i may check out to help out
The XR4x4 has a wider track dan the cossie 4x4. When fitting alloy wheels to an XR4x4 the wheels stick out the arches quite quickly. I don't think you will be able to fit escos wheels to an XR4x4.
What is more interesting is that the cossie hubs will give a higher roll centre than the XR hubs. You can easily tell that from the locations where the steering arm and TCA connect. So for a handling point of view I'd definately want the cossie hubs over the XR hubs.
