Small/Stick on front numberplates ?
Here is the front of my car, as it stands the numberplate is in the front window....
Im thinking of either leaving it where it is and trying the old ''its fell off officer approach''
My other thoughts were to have a small sticker style one made for the bumper on either of the sides or a small plate made for the same area. Now i know its not easy to get plates which arnt the legal size these days and i just dont know what to do.
Any ideas people ?

I've had a 'bike' size front plate on mine, stuck to the bumper, with holes drilled through, into the bumper, so can screw a full sized plate on, if / when I get stopped... Been stopped a few times, even had a wpc lend me a screwdriver when I didn't have one...

Ritchie, i thought that was only valid if there was no other place to "practically" fit a normal sized plate.
A while back i looked into rules on sticker number plates.
Under the new 2001 regs and specifically BS au145D a plate must be of plastic construction. As well as meeting set standards for abrasion resistance etc.
A stick on plate is therefore illegal if fitted to a vehicle registered post 2001 or a new plate fitted post 2001 on an older vehicle.
However, BS au145A which was in force 1973-2001 did not state it must be of plastic construction.
So a stick on number plate fitted prior to 2001 would be legal if it was made of material that meets the required abbrasion etc standards.
However, no stick on plate has been subject to the appropriate testing and hence again by default it is technically illegal.
So what can you do???
In a practical sense, you would be very lucky to find a copper, or even a VOSA official that knows BSau145A in enough detail to "read between the lines" that a stick on plate does not meet the wear standards. By reading the text alone, it doesnt say a stick on plate is illegal.
That might be enough to get past most officials.
So get a stick on plate made to the exact specification for spacing and lettering as BS au145a and pre 2001 rules (including a BS au145a mark) and fit it.
Then if stopped by cops claim it was on the car pre-2001.
Should get you benefit of the doubt if your polite enough and pass attitude test.
You could at best have a copy of BS au145a and d relevant pages in the car to show the copper, highlighting the lack of "of plastic construction" on A to back your story.
Should baffle most coppers anyway.
Or just fit a legal plate and avoid the potential hassle

I cant think of too many cars where there isnt room for a full size plate whether the owner likes it or not.

Do what you want with the plate, but due to their automated fine and vehicle tracking systems, they go nuts over illegal plates.

My brothers missus got pulled in her impreza P1 the other night for front number plate being too small. Ł60 fine for her! And told to get it changed within 24hrs or dvla would remove the reg from the car, resulting in her having to pay Ł700 to re-register the car
I got pulled tonight for my number plate ( I think the copper just wanted a look at the saff ) apparently this number plate is illegal
Anyone wanna guess why he says it's illegal?

RS imagery not allowed and font should be plain black. Too hard to tell if there is an 11mm border of white around the lettering, and no idea if it carries a BS mark or plate makers details ( although those only really apply to newly made plates )

correct on the rs logo! It has the bs number in the corner which I pointed out to him but he says the logo makes the plate illegal. He said I could have either a uk symbol or European symbol. Do you think putting a sticker of either symbol over the rs logo would be ok?

As plates are such an easy ticket for them, some cops will be arseholes about it.
Problem is, there is no grey area, you're either legal or you arent. It's an easy ticket for them to issue, and more tickets = more brownie points for them.

Dvla wouldn't remove the reg if it was the origional plate however if it was a private plate they could take the plate off you as you are not displaying it properly but wouldnt do that after 24 hours anyway.
As for the plate on the sierra the lettering isn't plain black as it should be, there looks like there's enough of a space between the Rs decal and the lettering so shouldn't be an issue on that part

I fully understand the implications of running an illegal plate just think how ever I do it with a full sized plate it will look silly.
I'm sure twins has a small.plate sat to the right as you look at the car.
I want to know where that guy had his small stick on plate made now
E16 RST is as close as ill get to a 5 digit plate......did find B3 ACH but it was 32 grand

If you can fit a legal plate after you get pulled....might be kind of hard to explain why you didnt fit one to prevent getting pulled in the first place.

I've had a slightly smaller plate using the correct font on both front and back of the merc and never had a problem.
I received an email from my supplier and they can now supply flexible plastic plates which meet the BS standard for plastic, another possibility?

incorrect my friend, they CAN remove the original plate and issue you with another, in extreme cases they can re-issue you a Q reg.

3D lettering is actually legal as well so defo the logo on the side, although I was under the impression if the plate was made pre-2006 then it was ok (coppers have no way of checking if it was made after 2006 until its an 2006--> car).

Might be hard convincing a cop or judge that a Ford Escort falls under any dispensation for Jap Imports.
And even then the rules for plate size and font are barely any different than for a normal UK car.

Has been pulled for it, but after the copper got the rule book out, it was 100% legal due to the small recess.
