Default BMW auto issues?

I know this is the wrong forum for this, but anyone have any experience in BMW autos?

Car is a 2002 330 petrol, and yesterday after an enthusuastic drive, A warniong light came up next to D on the clocks, and it remained in 3 or 4th gear, until it was left to cool.

The box was repaired before I bought the car at quite a cost. Is it firked, or would it benefit from an oil change or something?!

Thanks

Weeksy

Had similar issues with my old Alpina B3 a couple of years back, changed the oil & box filter and it was fine, filter was only something stupid like £16 from BMW.

Thanks lads.

If it was just oil and filter I would be overjoyed! Strange though, as from cold the box is lovely and crisp, but as it warms it becomes a bit fluffy, and can stall pulling away.... The box was out and sorted this time last year with it's previous owner - I didnt expect any aggro from it this soon!

I will book it into somewhere to get the faults reads, and see how we go from there. I know some of the sensors are accessible with the sump removed - fingers crossed its one of them!

Thanks again dudes

I have been told the oil itself is 100 quid odd! B

But compared to having the box out and rebuilding that its pocket money!

As above change your oil and filter, also check the filter isnt full of crap (could be a sign that other bits have worn)
The oil isnt cheap! and you need a shit load.
I had issue my my e39 (Triptronic ZF box) being low on oil i just topped it with dexron II, and never had any issue but alot of people say only use the BMW stuff.

I wasnt aware they had a filter, but then Ive never had an auto before!

THe confusing thisng is that BMW claims the box is sealed for life, and never needs any maintenence, something the specialist seem to disagree with! This box is a ZF, called steptronic I think?

Hoping the fact that it only plays up whens it hot signifies crappy thin oil, but as stated above, I know truck all about autos!

Booked in for the 3rd march to be checked over....

My dad's Passat had to have the tiptronic box rebuilt. We took it out and it still cost £1300 quid plus nearly £150 quids worth of oil!

I hear that VAG use the same oil as BMW, and believe it or not its cheaper from VW too!

This box has been out recently - I just wonder if they actually did anything while it was out!

I think this one is going to hurt :-(

Sealed for life or 100,000 miles to you and me. The ZF in my 5 is coming out this year for a refurb and healthcheck.

If you go on forum.bmw5.co.uk there is a forum post about a guy who does the work on these himself from his place in Scotland and charges £165 if I recall. He is very well respected by the board members and gets a lot of repeat business.

I wished he was closer matey!

I wonder if the oil change could magically fix it?!

I would pay 165 all day long! If its going to be fortunes to sort, I will out it I think. Annoying, because when its cold, its a lovely box, and not a bad old car!

When i got a quote from bmw is was a small fortune, i would inspect it first if i was in your shoes.

Get it on a code reader if no joy take the sump off check the filter and pan for debris if things dont improve if its ran low on oil and overheated you could have damaged the clutches and they brake so you maybe able to spot this when you take the sump pan off.

Also another pain is not knowing the exact oil whats in it if its been out before its about 8-10 liters iirc (inc torque converter) so its alot to replace.

I will level with you, I hate working on this car!

A specialist local to me is going to read the code, and then check the quality / level of the oil to see if that could be a factor. I cant see it to be honest, as the box was only done 3k odd ago, so I think its been done badly (if at all) and is terminal!

And I make you right on the oil front dude. If its the wrong gear, or the old stuff put back in even?! nthen that could cause an issue too, but only if I am really lucky...

Here is the old girl!

Everything crossed here!

Thanks
