i had the impression that saab diesels were shite, a mate of mine has a 2.0i non turbo (petrol) he wouldnt go near a (petrol) turbo version, bloody nightmare changing the turbo and expensive @ around 100,000 miles

mechanicaly amazing
stunning looks
galvanized body
very hardwearing interiors
plenty of low mile FVAGSH cars for peanuts compared to the competition
i had a 212bhp 440lb/ft 180,000 mile 2.5 V6 TDi Quattro and put a 2.2 20v turbo in the 180k car
still going strong today with well over 200k and only had brakes and a rear wheel bearing!

gpA pipercross filter gave it 212bhp/440lbft

this fell into the engine bay after TD went south

why's that i have the 150 in my astra same engine as used in the saab and i have never had a fault in the past 4 yrs of ownership & 40+ mpg
its regularly serviced cant fault it. my mate has a saab estate had 2 yrs no major faults.
all cars can be expensive to fix and all have problems.

Beware the dreaded Saab "cooking it's own engine oil" scenario
The front exhaust pipe on the Saab 2.0 Turbo Petrol runs so close to the sump that is boils the oil and very soon the pick up pipe blocks - oil starvation comes next and then turbo, crank and rods are soon in need of replacing
This is relevant to a Saab 9-3 and others models may well be affected
Heres one I stripped earlier !

i work on more saab breakdowns with fucked alternators and turbo(that lead to engine.....) failures than ANY other car in my essex region, i currently have a 9-3 B204I 2.0 non turbo at one of my centres that i cannot buy a distributor for, the 2001/51 car is scrap!
even electric window switches are Ł186 + vat for a 9-5, Wiring and the info display is purely shocking IMO
but other than reliability there lovely cars to look at

Irrelevant information because I wouldn't suggest spending real money on one... but I drove my ex's mother's MY05 9-5 Aero Estate and was bloody surprised at the mid range punch that it had. Seemed well built enough, bit bland and the handling was a touch on the wank side and although they seem like quite a lot of car for the money.. I think I'd rather go for a Volvo V70 T5 or D5 if I wanted an older estate car.

tbh every car has its good and bad points, buy with your eyes and ears, as above most cars share engines and yet they seem to vary in reliability. i sooner have a engine thats done a easy 150k than one thats had a hard life at 70k.
on a new car look our for the obvious and ofc DMF and turbo ect, as for diesel they maybe cheaper to run but there more to buy in the first place and more to repair so workout if you will ever see a return over petrol. just my 2p ofc
