Default Flat shifting

What is it? I've seen the term used before but never knew what it meant!

used to have a box set up, that allowed it without hitting the rev limiter,

Keep the accelerator pedel to the floor, engage the clutch, and the revs would hold at where they were, say 5000rpm, change gear and keep going.

Stops the revs dropping off through gear changes, and stresses everything out alot more

clutch in - shift to neutral - clutch out - clutch in - shift to next gear - clutch out

double clutch and heel and toe -

http://youtu.be/0j-3xIZK-Bk

Can't see that it's quicker, essential for old cars with 'crash box' (no syncromesh)

Also on a proper flat-shift set up there will be an ignition cut so you get a back fire BANG!! during gear changes. Can be actuated by clutch switch or load cell/micro switch gubbins on gear lever.

Most mk2 rally cars people are fitting flat shift. It allows the gearchange to be made without lifting of the throttle usually worked from a strain guage on the gearlever which connected to an ecu. It cuts spark/fuel to take the load of the gearbox and saves driver error of not timing the throttle lift right and damaging the gearbox

I run flat shifting on the FFD 7 Speed box in my Escort, it has to be one of the best mods out there for track.

You just keep the foot planted and pull that leaver

I run the fuel cut only

This is what it sounds like

Double clutching is slower but needed on older boxes with no synchro mesh. Drove an old (see stone age) Bedford horse box that needed double clutching.

Heel and toe is a very useful technique I even do it in the company pool cars

Why does he tap the brake pedal with his left foot?

So combat 'pad knock back' - when he goes over kerbs and under heavy cornering forces the pistons can get pushed back into the caliper by the disc rotor, so when he brakes he will have a long pedal (excess travel) by tapping it with the left foot on the straight before a braking zone, his brakes will be 100% when he needs them.

See what happens when you try it round a bend.

I have it on mine the ecu cuts spark while you change gear so the foot stays planted & boost stays up. No back fires if its set up correctly.

my 100E has flatshift lol
takes some getting used to keeping your foot planted expecting the revs to go through the roof and they don't!

On your setup Rod how is the system triggered and how does it know when the gear change is over?

In the video above, the driver is double de-clutching when he's down shifting? In a box with no syncro, I always thought that you need to use double de-clutching on up shifts too?

Theres a micro switch on the clutch pedal. I assume when you lift the pedal its back to normal never really thought about it.

Default Flat shifting

You can even get a flatshifting system that not only does full throttle clutchless up gearshifts but clutchless downshifts as well with an autoblip system no need to heel & toe see www.flatshifter.com called the flatshifter Expert system i think, a friend of mine has one on his focus 4x4 cosworth rally car

Nicked this link of a Flatshifter Expert system in action
from the website www.flatshifter.com
It worked great at VIR! We won both races and we set a new track record by 1.1 seconds! (Expert system)
