From the info gathered when I was looking for one of these there doesnt seem to be any negatives. Serious improvements in response. MPG and general niceness to drive. Sure Tiff on here has had his done and likes it.

This should sway you toward having it done

There's a guy who was looking for you, something about a car stereo, have you sorted that out Jim or should we rubber you and tell the lads on the E39 Forum to give you a swerve too??

Cheers,
Grant

Manual, as said above.

Auto, because the box will shit itself. It put me off doing mine.

isnt Tiff's an auto too.

I would still get it done but then also look for a manual box to chuck in once the auto gives up the ghost

E39 on an auto I cannot confirm, but on the later one (E91 or whatever they are on an '07 plate), a remap makes all the difference. I know of one that was remapped @ about 25k mileage, was still remapped when he sold it on 77k and it had never missed a beat in all that time. Fuel economy went from 38mpg avg up to 52mpg as well, so a worthwhile increase. Plus the fact that the TC could not keep up, and if you turned it right off (hold button for 3 seconds) it would light both rear wheels up to the limiter, change to 2nd and then leave another couple for a few more feet before finally hooking up and disappearing like a scalded cat. And that was on the M5 alloys as well, being an M-Sport model.

Jimbo....

Mine is a Manual.......(And it doesnt have the dreaded swirl flaps....So if you havent removed yours, get them out quick!!!!!)..

Remap........ DEFFO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Drives alot smoother and more responsive as you would think, also my MPG went up by about 3mpg round town.
Pulls like a train now.....(Same torque as a standard E39 M5....).............

It will just put extra strain on the usual componants i would think....but i had mine remapped at 114k, its now done 4k on it and no problems at all........

I've not heard any negatives, doesn't mean there aren't any - I'd have it done

What's with the 'sensible' car anyway?

rich - yeah mate, a sport touring, check facebook for piccies.

If the gearbox is really weak can you get a map that can increase your MPG but not deliver box-destroying torque?

i love e39's that are done up well. look mint, a remap would finish it off nicely too. They must munch the miles up and its in relaxed auto too

You could use the torque limiters to help the transmision.

My cousin bought one of the 530d things with 160k on the clock and it drives like virtually new, and he paid less than a grand for it a good few months ago

Quick enough as it is not to need a remap until you get used to it

Paid 4600 for it, got the bloke down from 5k. Thats a trader and with 6 months warranty

looked at a load of ropey ones at the 3k-4k mark including a black one near you and figured it was worth spending a few quid more for a nice one with some warranty

I did look at a nice saloon in bexleyheath in silver, bloke wanted 4.4k but it needed a pair of tyres and an Insp1. he didnt wanna lower his price either so just kept looking
