Any reason NOT to remap a E39 530D?

I dont ever judge panel colours in pictures, its nearly always misleading, but even if its had the front bumper painted, it still is nothing like the cheapest possible one going that Mr S1 was making out it would be.

I agree chip,

Looks nothing but a reflective metallic pigment to me, on differing panel faces.

Face on, i bet it looks exactly the same.

Im sure we can build you a transmission safe map, but you will need to see some torque increases to see a good fuel saving.

The car looks nice, needs a black grill though dont you think? i never worked out why BMW covered the rest of the car in black trim, but fitted a chrome grill, mine was just the same when i got it.

You might have only seen one pic, but dont assume that means I have too westy, lol, it looks great from all angles, as you would expect from a trader.
Still might be a shitter underneath though of course, time will tell

Personally I wouldnt want an auto one cause of the throttle flaps anyway though!

Have to say, I bought my 530D after Tiff raved about his... I test drove it & didn't like it! But decided to have a go anyway, and since march I have done 16k in it.

I have to say, it is the best car I have owned .. How is it I LOVE driving it, even though it's an automatic diesel?!! Obviously it's not a sports car, but for a big old bus it REALLY handles, love the RWD balance & the mega predictable chassis. Autobox is fantastic as I do a lot of motorway work & driving on Friday nights, it suits the engine perfectly IMHO. Love the way you can waft along and be doing 120mph without realising it, it really is an epic bit of kit for distance work.

My predicament is do I chip/intercooler/decat it for around 290(!)Bhp, or sell up & get sn M5?

Even cheap ones are double that normally!
assuming it's the same one as jims pics, it's a 200 model, guy wanted Ł1250 for it and he knocked him down as it had no speedo and an abs fault, remidied by changing one Ł30 sensor on the back wheel and hasn't missed a beat since he's had it

not an estate though, and not the sports version thing either, but it's a proper 530d, as the badge says on the back

i think i've got a pic of it

3 things I would like to know.
1. what do the swirl flaps do?
2.if its ok to remove them, why are they there to begin with?
3. how much % would the remap increase insurance by,

1) The swirl flaps disrup the airflow into the engine (in the inlet tracts) at low-mid range RPM to give a better response/ fuel mix. They are variable, but are built badly resulting in parts of the flap falling into the engine and mashing the piston/head.

2) As above. The removal does slightly dull response & can lead to a small increase in black smoke with large throttle demands at low engine speeds. There are solutions which involve adding better quality fasters to the flap assemblys, ensuring that the flaps stay functional but won't fall to bits into your engine.

(mine are still fitted & unmodified, I will get round to it in the new year when the car gets serviced.. But car is now on 157k and they have not fallen apart yet!)

3) From nothing to lots depending on your insurance, and if you actually tell them!

thanks for the write up, so surely the modification to make them more secure is far better than removel?

also as to the insurance, is it ever worth not telling them?
seems they are pretty clued up these days and tend to find out its been remapped

That's a perfect description of it IMO.

But taking on 3 step kids, fuck that. Unless you're shooting blanks then it becomes a real option I suppose.

50+ mpg?

my computer tells me i'm doing about 32-34 around town and 38-42 on a run

did about 200 miles to 20quids worth of the black stuff

only put fuel in it once sofar

not sure on the flaps, ive got a warranty so might just wait until thats up then look into it.

didnt know you can "uprate" them, anyone got a link for more detail? seems a better approach than removal.

Why all the Jim bashing these days? I'm genuinely confused as to why?

I read the thread on the stereo and it seems like a piss in a Tsunami! Has Jim done something else to upset people? Or has everyone on PF become extremely petty since I've been off reading MO's threads on the MLR? I've met Jim and he was a top bloke and a good laugh to drink with. Can't understand why people are giving him so much shit?

Maybe its because most people haven't met him, and only know him from the famous threads about him (blowing up dodgy motors, stealing stereos and letting someone else impregnate his mrs )

Well, the only blowing up I recall involved his 4i which he basically gave loads of money to some company who bodged it a bit and then closed and fucked off to ireland or something after ripping off another PF member.

Now everyone is having a go? Not the PF I remember!

Agreed, known Jim years, he's a great guy, amazing what a fucked up perception of him some wallys on here seem to have!
