You can blank the EGR, but it will bring the EML on. Some people claim that drilling a hole in the plate will prevent this. But in practice, the hole has to be so big as to render the blanking pointless.

The other option is to blank it, and carry a fault code reader in the car to clear the fault every couple of weeks. It won't make the car go into limp mode, but it would mask any 'real' faults.

Does your EGR have 'wires' coming out of it, or is it purely mechanical, i.e. just with a vac hose? Or one of those odd 'hybrid' ones the X-Types seem to have sometimes, which are both mechanical and electrical.

If it's the former, then after a couple of hundred miles it will come on... or your EML light is broken

What I have head people doing is plugging the vacuum line

And that stops it opening and doesn't flag a fault... But I dont know how true this is

It's not true on the Mondeo and it's a very similar set-up.

If it's purely mechanical, plugging the vacuum line will work, but if it has an electrical wiring plug too, then the light will come on eventually!
