You can blank the EGR, but it will bring the EML on. Some people claim that drilling a hole in the plate will prevent this. But in practice, the hole has to be so big as to render the blanking pointless.

The other option is to blank it, and carry a fault code reader in the car to clear the fault every couple of weeks. It won't make the car go into limp mode, but it would mask any 'real' faults.
