right here is my situation
i have been lent a 2002 1.2 renault clio 16v and need to get insured
i'm a full time student
1 year motorcycle no claims
0 years car no claims
anything less than 2 grand i would be happy with. both my parents have 15+ years no claims but have cars insured in their own right so being a named driver on their car wouldn't really work.
any ideas?

Speak to the insurance firms and ask what you can do to reduce the policy - your manner on the phone (politeness and well spoken and decent use of the English language will make all the difference)
Things like:
Limited mileage say 5k per year (13 miles per day if used every day)
Insured between certain times ie not driven between 1am and 6am
Higher volentary excess
alarms
where it is parked at night
It may not make a huge difference but it may add up.
Also, adding parents to your policy can reduce the premieum as the driving and therefore risk is shared between a younger and older driver - you would remain the owner and main driver, they are just named.
The reason i mention your tone is that I know of a few lads that have struggled and they talk like deadheads 'yeah mate, fukin getting stupid quote yeah, aint payin 2k for fukin corsa' etc what is the person in the call centre going to think??
Polite, sensible attituted may help encourage the person in the call centre suggest some ways to reduce the policy.
Not going to be cheap, also consider selling the clio if not that low a group insurance for a lower grouoped car, ka etc.

Just make sure you say its kept somewhere private overnight, and a milage cap will help for sure, it will all add up the little things to make it cheaper. Get the escort on the road instead!

I understand that, but there is post code, mileage, NCB, type of use, convictions, accidents, named drivers, level of cover, etc etc which all contribute to a quote.. so it would be pretty difficult to even give you an accurate ball park figure I'd think.

for a 17-21 year old there are far bigger factors than insurance group ime. anything upto group 7 or 8 (before the system changed) is fine so long as its not your classic boy racer car that gets written off 10 a day! basically anything with a history of being written off by young drivers is going to be expensive!! for instance i found when i was younger that a 1.8 focus was cheaper to insure than a 1.1 saxo for me so the clio is not going to be the best for insurance i'm afraid!
