Zetec turbo on the cheap.

Zetec turbo on the cheap.
I.e, de-comp plate, do the pistons need skimming? And is there anything else that needs doing internally?
And what sort of results have people had by doing it this way, power figures? Reliable?
Thanks
Ben.

Got it, I'll have a nosey a bit later.
Does this make a difference when it comes to turboing? I know people favour blacktop for big Bhp, but is there anything up with the silvertops?

So do i funny enough! lol! Also mo, so let me get this straight, considering no one makes double vavle springs to fit in a zetec head which doesnt require ££££'s worth of head work, you spent that on your head rather then forgeing your engine... interesting...

focus rs valve springs can be had cheap and will be a good upgrade some arp bolts and a FRS head gasket would be a good base.
although its not just about engine components if you drive like you stole it then it probably wont last long also make sure you get a decent map, even a cheapo AFR gauge would give you half a clue on whats going on.
230-260bhp shouldnt be too hard

I have a 1800 blacktop sat in my garage and a 1600 focus with 125k on.
I keep wondering how cheaply a zetec turbo could be done for. I have been told that blacktop rods are good for 300bhp and I would happily stick a decomp plate on but it's the management side of things where it gets a little pricey.
Is there anyway of doing it with a 5th injector or something similar to the turbo'd zetec mondeos from the mid 90's?
Gavin.

zetec turbo build's can make a bit of a dent in the pocket im doing one at the mo in my restro im useing a 2ltr silver top with a decomp plate 2x multi layerd metal head gasket's 1.8 zetec oil pick up pipe 1.8 zetec sump you need to open the hole's a little bit on the 1.8 zetec flywheel 2x oil return's 1 on the front & 1 on the back im useing a zetec turbo exhaust manifold a custom inlet manifold focus rs fuel rail and injector's OMEX 600 ecu.But if you want to use your escort turbo exhaust manifold you can use an adapter plate which are about £40 off e-bay or you can drill the hole and tap them and you can use a fst rs turbo inlet manifold but you will need to fix a plate on there to fit the head but you can get one already done off e-bay.But the one thing i have learned through this is look into it first make a plan and stick to it

mine made EXACTLY 298BHP @WHEELS . PLUS 35BHP FOR FLYWHEEL [THE OP WROTE IT ON GRAPH BUT I JUST SAY 330 AT FLY AND 300 AT WHEELS nobody asks me for exact figure so i just say a rounded figure.

at the end of the day i see people spending thousands and thousands on a zetec turbo engine but it ends up being slow because they dont spend the money where they need to they sepdn money on the engine but then it still fucks up. i spent the cash on the managament, injectors, head gasket,breather,pipes,t4 turbo, gearbox mapping etc thats what makes the car quicker the way its set up and specced its up to the owner how far to push it .... i didnt spend stupid amount of cash on the engine just incase something went wrong and it blew up! atlease if my engine did blow up the money i spent on parts will still be ok and be good for the engine i get built next

stop being narrow minded. you dont believe it because you aint seen it. no matter what you think mines there doing it and i know people done it.. ask SEVS in willenhall he has a engine built exact same spec as mine and runs 330bhp in a xr2 ... all this time it lasted he crashed the car recently though at a ford show

i'm just mapping my zetec turbo now and there ain't nothing cheap about getting reliability.
set of valve springs, steel rods and forged pistons would be a start.
as for breather setup mentioned at one point, i've modified the crank breather and use a catch tank instead of feeding back into inlet. no issues to mention so far.
in my opinion sort out the transmission, mtx75 box is recommended, will hold the power far better than either a bc or ib5 gearbox.
so set aside £1500-£2000 for gearbox conversion including custom shafts and electronic speedo, clutch setup and flywheel.
i'm about 7k in on mine, but there are a few bits i'd like to change and improve already :blub:

running rs engineering injectors
competition cossie race fuel pump
fuel reg
rover inlet
omex management
t4 turbo at 16psi boost [for now]
individual coil pack conversion
pro alloy front mount
focus rs headgasket
etc etc etc

mate the car has skimmed pistons and what looks like a plate in it. but im sure it has a focus rs headgasket.. im no engine builder dude the engine is not a forged block i aint no liar yes its sad that it aint forged and that i should have forged it.. but this is how i got it and its been reliable enough for me and hasnt EVER given me a problem engine wise.i drive it like its stolen all the time and its been perfect. people i know have copied exacty my set up and its proved to be good and they do trackdays etc.. 4 years now and never a problem. . people are scared for nothing i seen em at 360bhp and surviving mines makes 298bhp at the wheels at 16psi on my T4 TURBO and runs like this perfect. when i put the foot down all HELL BREAKS LOOSE! the thing is a weapon.

also you say you spent the money on head gasket and yet you aren't sure what headgasket is in there. you're not an engine builder as you've said, could even be a de-comp plate, who knows, doesn't matter i'm sure it's quick enough though.
out of interest, what are the coil on plug units from?
can you find out as my ecu can run COP just need to know some units i can fit in there.
and spending money on pistons and rods is a very good idea, that#'s what dictates how the engine behaves and forged are better than standard ford items.

skimmed pistons can be fine, run them in my previous engine, piston went in the end lol!
