Re-Mapping
What does a re-mapping do to a car? Can standard cars be re-mapped and how much does it cost? And what be achieved by re-mapping say a standard 1.6 escort or focus?
Sorry for posting such daft questions all the time, just trying to learn wee bits and bobs as I go.

no point remapping a 1.6 escort or focus. unless you change the management. have a look at janos xr3..

remapping is a form of engine tuning. certain cars come limited as standard..remapping a car will unblock the restrictions. depending on what you want, you can change the way the car is mapped to suit your needs..eg - Increased throttle response, Flat spots will be ironed out, smoother power delivery, quicker acceleration, and so on..
Tuning companies usually rolling road the car to see what your car is performing at , and to find out what bhp your car is they print out a dyno graph. you get a lot of people claiming that their car is 1000bhp or some stupid unrealistic figure but until theres proof of a dyno graph consider them talking shit! thers quite a bit of banter on passionford in regards to people claiming their car is faster than supercars but nevermind hey!
when your running a turbocharged engine you should get it mapped around once a year. just to make sure everything is running sweet.
you can also get you car live mapped. have a look at stu's link from msd http://www.motorsport-developments.co.uk/whatismap.html
theres loads of info out there just read mate. its interesting stuff.
jano from oddkidd mapped my escort, and he done a bloody good job of it!

Its not a daft question if you don't know the answer, even the top tuners on here had to learn at some point.

Good vid! Car sounds fantastic!! I'd love to have a noise like that with my car, I'm pretty sure he runs anti lag, is it running a launch control or a traction control aswell?

Turbo cars tend to have a lot more potential to gain, as boost can be increased easily.
Dyno printouts can be total bull shit as well, some dynos for example don't have enough inertia/mass to measure trans loss figures, these are supplied on a CD ROM, and some are total guesswork on the RR suppliers part.
There are many cars on pf that will slaughter most supercars, not hypercars, power to weight is a good deciding factor, though at higher speeds drag comes into it big time.
There's genuine 200mph cars on pf, like rods.
It's complete shit that it needs mapping once a year if it's turbo'd, a fuelling check is a good idea, but if the map is out every year there is a serious problem with the tuner or car.
tabetha
Quite a lot of cars and the power they produce Is purposely capped so the vehicle sits into certain fleet catergories, ie a 110 bhp model can be just the same as the 140 bhp model when it comes to the crunch apart from the map.

Some are indeed limited. Certain Minis are a great example.
In fact, most of the calibrations we change in the ECU calibration of 90% of cars nowadays are the torque limiters and these maps do indeed literally limit the amount of allowed torque, so the chap is correct.
