So the volvo engine in the st/rs, the yamaha engine in the small zetecs, the peugeot engines in the diesels and the mazda v6's all have the same sump plug threads?

The volve engine is the same actually

Dunno about the rest, but at least ive put up something useful rather than talking about how you've never needed to change a sump plug! I imagine he's either fooked the threads or rounded the head. Not that hard to work out is it.

Just be aware it may have been bodged in there in the past, and have knackered threads!!
No need at all for all this sump plug replacing, the cossie(2wd anyway) is only torqued up to 21-28NM.
I always put sealant on the threads, not a single drop of the oil stuff will leak from here then.

I'm pretty sure the 2wd cossie is 14 x 1.5, about 3/4" long.
I just use either loctite 5900 or 5910, or steal my dads hylomar, as it's free!!
I have always used sealant on the threads, started doing this when I needed a new plastic washer on a sump plug, on a renault I think it was about 25 years ago.
I've never seen a single drop leak from any sump plug this way, even those later where I didn't even bother to fit a sealing washer that didn't work in the first place.
The only issue I have found is cars with pressed steel sumps, the sump rots, as it is no longer covered in oil, but this takes years and years, if pressed tin sumps I would put underseal etc on them to stop the rust.
There isn't really any chance of hylomar getting into the engine, as it has to get to the end of the threads to start with, and even if it did get into the pump, it is so soft it would cause no harm, and would soon be mashed down.
I don't use loads of it, I just put a 5mm dab on my finger and spread it around the whole bolt, all the way from top to bottom, firmly so it is just in the threads rather than sitting on them, when the plug is tightened up, it will spread out over the sump plug head just wipe off, this shows it is well sealed.

does the length matter as 3/4 inch is 1.8cm and 1.5cm is 5/8ths. I guess the crucial size is the m14?

The stuff Tabetha is talking about is called a flange sealant so not a threadlock as such. I certainly wouldn't start putting threadlock onto a sumpplug, that's asking for trouble.

Loctite make lots of sealants as well as thread lock and stud lock, 5910 is well expensive though, around £18 for a small tube like a hylomar size.

It is indeed, the 5910 is used on production lines due to it's fast curing time - 5 minutes at most, awsome stuff though.

Took me three mins to change the oil and filter on my car yesterday, without using any sealant or even thinking about changing the sump plug or washer. It doesnt leak, and it wasnt a problem.

It wasnt more, an Impreza has to be the easiest thing in the world to do an oil and filter on.
