Default 911 owners/previous owners

just returned from my annual trip to le mans...another good weekend in france. been discussing with my friends over what car to replace the RS with as a weekend runner. 911's cropped up (alongside TVR's.... ) but i discovered i know little about them.

saw a few over the weekend, really likes the look of the 993 carrera S (widebody) but was shocked to find how much they are, why do you need 20+k to buy a 993 when 15-20k will get a nice 996, are they appreciating classics (i know the turbo's are) do they have known faults etc.

a few years back, 2005, i did a porsche driving day and droev the then current 911, which i am guessing would have been a 996 carrera 2S.....this is another i would consider as it was a great drive.

my planned budget will be 20k and to keep it as a weekend car...where would my money best be spent.....considered a boxster but foudn them a little cramped after driving the 911, drove a boxster s (2005) on that same porsche day

advice anyone?

993's were the last of the air cooled Porsche's. The purists won't touch anything else hence they're worth money on the market.

As said above the 993's now command a premium price as there the last of the air cooled cars , if looking at 996's the main thing to look out for is RMS seal leaking as the normal 996's did not run the GT1 based dry sump engine that was fitted to the turbo and gt3.

The 993 GT2 is the most awesome 911 ever IMHO, but you probably won't see change out of 150K

There is a new seal out which cures this problem. Also check that the rads have bin replaced as these rot inside the front bumper and cost a small fortune to replace all of them.

Yeah thats a REALLY good point! If you do buy one MAKE SURE you get aftermarket warranty on the car covering crank shaft oil seals and radiators. You won't have a problem with anything else.

Rads are easy to change and cost about £600 for the pair , I meshed my old bumper to stop them getting choked up and rotting again.

Decent 996 Turbo will be 28k plus, but trust me.... if they go wrong, they will make cossies look like a budget car!

Good question and one I often ask myself Just wasnt using the car enough to justify having that much tied up in it, for what i sold the beatle for i now have.

The difference between a 996 interior and a boxster is negligible, you get 2 midget seats in the back of a 911 but they share alot of trim.

IMO the 4s is the best non-turbo option, but that's because I'm a massive homosexual.

I bought a 996TT for a mate a couple of years ago, who then took a few months to come up with the money so I used it and caught the bug! I eventually found 997 4s in Cobalt blue and kept it for a while but hardly used it, took a 2.7 boxster in p/ex and found myself making excuses to go out in it. I felt more comfortable leaving it places plus there's nothing like the wind through my long flowing comb over.

I was new to them at the time and Porkie stumped up the best advice, might be worth firing him a message in case he doesn't see this thread?

Other than the issues mentioned above, bare in mind things like you should only fit the Porsche N rated tyres which are a bit dearer than normal, lesser mortal rubber.

cheers paddy

i am thinking of the boxster, the 997 S models can be had for very good money, and although they wont be worth as much as the 911's you do get more for your money

just gathering funds at the moment, will probably buy in winter when people dont want them and you can get them cheap cheap

are the running costs different between boxster and 911. also have people had experiences with the cayman s?

so.....for my 20k its either a nice 997 2007 boxster S, a 2002 911 or a 2006 cayman S??

I think you mean 987/Boxster S, the 997 is the 911 from 2005 on.

Personally, I'd rather have a boxster than a 996 [not including the turbo obviously!] because like you said, you get more for your money. You'll get a 3.4 S Boxster in your budget but come winter time, there may be a few 997s in your budget?

Out of all the choices, I would go for a 997 time and time again, I prefer the shape of the front lights, the interiors are that bit nicer and they generally feel a bit nicer than the 996 to drive IMO.

1976 3.3 turbo is where it's at imo!!
I was looking at a 911, a reg the other day and was very surprised at the room in the back there was actually leg room as well in the rear.
Must admit I would love a 911 or variant of, one day one day!!

2006 Cayman s all the way for your budget if you want the best driving experience, unless you really want that classic 911 experience

Ive often thought about selling my M3 and cossie for a cayman 3.4.

This one is well cheap and looks the bollox (higher mileage than most but still)..
