I think you mean 987/Boxster S, the 997 is the 911 from 2005 on.
Personally, I'd rather have a boxster than a 996 [not including the turbo obviously!] because like you said, you get more for your money. You'll get a 3.4 S Boxster in your budget but come winter time, there may be a few 997s in your budget?
Out of all the choices, I would go for a 997 time and time again, I prefer the shape of the front lights, the interiors are that bit nicer and they generally feel a bit nicer than the 996 to drive IMO.
