Daddy thrashes!!!
So whos insurance do you need to go through for thrash? The venue's? The mags? The organizer of the event? Canlt you just get disclaimers signed or something to cover your arses and say that you wonnlt take responisibility for someones actions in the event of an accident? It they aren't willing to do that then they can't compete. Would that not work.
All this winds me up. If someone has a big off - it's their fault - why should anyone pay anything towards it?! I know it is a risk to drive fast, but accept this risk - nobody should get in trouble if I agree to do it and am of sound mind and body.

Rick, what it someone has a big off and crashes into someone else at the venue who is there for another reason?
Its not like you are be given exclusive access to the entire site, you could easily end up busting into the carpark at the bottom of the runway at 200mph and kill someone in there who is nothing to do with the event.

Dont blame the mags lads, they told me about this a long time back.
Its sad when mags have to stop doing things that people want. PF even got rid of their stats page just as if all those times/runs cannot now be talked about.
I suppose i should be glad that i entered some of those Daddy Thrashes back in the day.
Interesting that some event still do take place. I know three events where 200mph runs happen. drivers signed a piece of paper saying that they were going to run & payed & agreed it with Brunters off there own bat. All drivers had this agreement with their own name on it. The organiser just collected all the papers / cash.
I doubt there is the will or the interest to ever run a Ford Thrash these days even if ways around the problems are found.
People moan & lots say they want to find the Topspeed of their car, well its only a phone call away so not hard.

It all because of the blame culture. Someone can sign all the disclaimers in the world, and take all the precautions imaginable, and we can have stringent safety checks, a driver briefing and a trained medic crew on standby.... but... if someone has a massive crash there's nothing to stop the family of the injured/dead person for looking for someone to blame (and a nice fat payout). If that happens it would literally kill the magazine, and I'd face the very real risk of going to prison.
Understandably I don't want to go to prison!
To give you an example of how extreme things are - I was in talks with our insurers, and our legal team about doing a 200mph run with a couple of people including Rod. They stipulated that a professional mechanic had to check the car over thoroughly before any runs were attempted. When I stated that Mark Shead would be there and there's no one in the world who knows the car better than him, that wasn't enough, and they STILL wanted a mechanic there.
In this day and age big business simply don't want to expose themselves to risk. And a thrash is a BIG risk!

it's not just silly, but a shame when you do all this to your car and can only use 1/3rd of it's potential
i'm sure those lot over at top gear don't get a mechanic to go over all the cars with a fine toothcomb before jeremy does all his spinning wheels and smokey doughnuts in them

Blame culture is a fucking joke.
The way things are going we will end up with all mods needing TUV or similar type approval anyway,
then what next???
the family of a dead person suing the manufacturer of a performance mod because the car was potentially going faster than standard and therefore potentially had the mod not been fitted might hypothetically have gone a bit slower and really stretching the possibilities here, might have been the 1 or 2mph lower needed to avoid a death/serious injury

and lets take it a few years down the road from there.... manufacturers stopping producing performance cars full stop, not because of environment, but because any accidents involving speed and a performance car leaves the manufacturer open to court action as they hold coorporate liability by supplying a "faster than necessary" car to the public and such cars are statistically likely to be driven by more irresponsible drivers, so, at a real stretch here, by knowingly making and selling such performance cars, the manufacturer must know that doing so will likely lead to increased chance of death or injury at the hands of statistically riskier drivers in a statistically riskier type of vehicle.
and on and on...
and of course same applies to garages that fit modified parts or service modified or performance cars, by doing so and allowing such cars to be on the road makes them partially responsible....
where do you draw the line??? Its already well beyond sensible or rational so where will it end???
already ive noticed some business's afraid to expand/take on new work because there is some risk. Hell, even 3 so called exhaust specialists have refused to do me a new exhaust as its not a standard car
yet they advertise as making custom exhausts

Surley if Mark is there he qualifies as a mechanic?

Whilst that kind of incident would be regretable, I think it is also the result of you agrreing to put yourself at risk. Airfields are dangerous places - they are built to accomodate things that go very fast.
Anyone that is on site should be made aware that it is a dangerous place to be - a plane could likely mis judge its landing and fall on your head, and an old Sierra could take your legs off at 220mph. Are you willing to accept these risks? If not, then please leave.
There are other complications, Brunters is a busniess and having people trying to do 200mph may put off other potential clients. In this case it would be a sensible decision to not allow the high speed runs.
Truth is, nobody is really bothered if someone else is doing 200mph, but they are prevented doing so not by sound logical reasoning, but by greed.
