Default Key needed

Heya,
My first post here so i hope i'm in the correct part of the forum,
My Mondeo MK3 (2001) has only one key, and it's extremley worn,
yesterday i struggled to turn it in the barrel, so i'm kinda desperate,
i'm also pretty skint, i've been quoted some stupid prices to get a replacment,
all around the £100 pound mark,
i can get a key cut without the transponder for around £12, but obviousley thats not much use as it won't start the car,
is it possible to get a key cut that is just the blade with the horseshoe shaped piece of plastic, so i can simple remove the transponder/battery part of my old key and replace it with the freshly cut key ?
or can anyone come up with an alternative solution ?
or recommend a decent key cutter in the manchester area who isn't gonna pull my pants down !

any help is very much appreciated.

Neil.

I believe you can just change the transponder, shouldn't be too much drama

Just get a key cut, around £5, put on same key ring as your existing key, your worn key is near enough to be picked up by the receiver around barrel, so don't even need to bother with transponder !!

Hello again,

sorry to revive this thread,
i had a key cut yesterday (blade with horseshoe, so i just swapped for the old blade and kept transponder),
when i tried it on my car, both door and ignition, it wouldn't turn, it also felt a little awkward on getting it into the barrel, not as smoothe as the old key,
i took it back to Timpsons where i had it cut, they filed it down a little and still no joy , the fella there remarked that it could be the barrels being worn, if the state of my old key is anything to go by,
is this likely to be the case (the car is a 2001), or is it more likely to be poor workmanship on their part.
and is it worth trying to smoothe down my key with either a file or sandpaper, or am i likely to completely bugger it up.
i've tried comparing the keys to see if the cuts are similar, and they do appear to be correct, but as i said, my old key is worn and very very smoothe, i will post pics if needed.

thanks in advance for any help.

Neil.
