DIY stronger con rods?
By using old engine oil and heating them up red/white hot will make them stronger but more britlle apparently? sounds stupid to me

I wouldnt personally be attempting pikey heat treatments on conrods TBH
De-seaming them and then getting them shot peened can improve their performance though.
But TBH with most engines now having 300 quid chinese steel sets available its not worth doing, my corsa has rods that are proven to be improvable by the techniques I have just mentioned but I just chucked some cheap steal ones in instead of bothering as they work even better (although still arent arrow sort of quality of course!)

load of bullshit.... heat treatement can only be done by professionals, not by amateurs.
you wouldnt even know what material u got so how are u trying to figure out what treatement it needs ? u dont know, simple as.

Pmsl id never do it, sounds fucking stupid to me as your making the rod red hot(making it weaker just by that) then putting it in oil to try and make it harder, wouldnt it just crack when put in the oil anyway?

yeah it does work by that theory.. but then you have to anneal it to make it harder .. heat treatment just alligns the particles .... annealing or tempering is the key to it working correctly .. and thats the hard part .. the right ammount of heat for the right ammount of time ..

I wouldnt normally joke on a technical thread, but I thought in this instance it was obvious stevie was messing about.
Serious answers just to avoid any confusion:
Heating and immersing in oil CAN help, but it needs to be carefully controlled I wouldnt try it at home
Dressing the seams back carefully and smoothing the rod finish over and then shot peaning can help and is DIY-able
Drilling holes in them to lighten them isnt a good idea
