Just silicone where the gasket meets the half moon seals otherwise no sealant needed.

Sorry should have said that, same thing for the half moons too - just want to buy some branded tested stuff that doesn't fail after a short time.

Rtv silicone will be fine. It sealed the sump on my focus no bother as there isn't a gasket on that. Ford sell it at about 15 quid for a tiny tube which i bought not thinking that we have loads of the Volvo stuff at work

RTV stuff is ok, but if you want belt and braces security use LOCTITE 5900 or 5910, seriously stupid expensive, but for a reason, I've used this to hold on a sump with NO gasket, or half moons and NO bolts, don't ask!!
When the sump was removed some years later it took me about 1 hour to straighten the sump afterwards!!

Exactly!!!!!! We are only talking about sealing the join between the gasket and the half moon seals, anything else is pure bodgery!

Tab you know its available from Halfords for £5.99? I hunted all over for it after i saw you recommend it for EVERYTHING, lol. But i do agree, its fantastic stuff. Ebay is a tenner for the cheapest yet for once Halfords came up trumps!
