Default Transit van

I'm looking for a clean transit but i'm on a budget and do not want to get loans finance etc...

Finding a clean one for under a grand isn't as easy as i thought

Now the problem i have is it's either the old shape and rusted to hell or there is the new ones that appear to be clean but are non runners.

How reliable are the newer ones compared to the old ones as the old ones seemed to run for ever but the body let them down. Alot of them say the dieseal pump has gone now this seems to be common so i was thinking it maybe worth buying one get it towed back and save up a bit and get the pump done.

The thing is is this an easy job and am i right in thinking this will be expensive to sort...

What is the genral opinion on the new vs old model

CheeRS in advance

Absolute night mare, would never advise someone to buy one (2.0 TDCI engine) after the issues we have had with ours at work.Think the first bill was £1300.00+ vat (i think) and it still was not right. So it went back then we collected it and it did 5 miles apppx and more bother.so it went back and yes we collected it again and guess what it did another few miles so yes it went back for the last time with instruction that it MUST be correct when we collect again so the garage owner ran it for a week to ensure it was fixed.

if serviced well do last longer, in regards to the pumps. the tdci's are not coded, if your handy with a spanner and shop about you will get the pump reconned for a few hundred, or just buy one from ebay for a couple, injectors do drop there coding which can be a pain

its also a common missconception that you have to match the numbers perfectly for replacement, not the case as theres just a few different revisions, if it looks the same and has same plugs it will work

I have a 2004 transit i paid £3500 with 85k on the clock about 2 years ago, nothing has gone wrong with apart from i changed discs and pads and rear shoes.
When i was looking 99% of them were all old builders vans and they were wrecks,i didnt rush in and one came up in warrington so i went over couldnt believe how good it was compared to the ones i looked at,i think it was a market van it had sequins and bits of cotton here and there
Good luck finding one for 1k

£1k?pretty much dogend territory there fella.
The old 2.5 is bulletproof,I know that's an overused saying but it is,indestructible in normal use.
Rot is the killer, and everywhere.I'd put money on it that a mint old model transit would fetch more than a roughish millenium version.
I don't think ive ever seen a newer diesel one that hasn't had some sort of engine or sensor issue although there are plenty of folk out there who know their onions with these babys!!!
I can see from one of your previous posts that you use the van for a bit of work, you may find it better to look for an early vw t4,preferably a turbo model as they go really well, look cool and don't rust anything like as bad as either transit, although they don't have the headroom of the tranny.
Sprinters are good, but out of your price range or battered at a grand.
A good van for the money is an iveco, very reliable, big, strong and cheap for bits too.loads for a grand too.

If you're on a budget forget anything with a TDCI (Common Rail) engine. They're a lot more refined, more economical and quicker than the DI (Direct Injection) engine, but cost a damn sight moire when they do go wrong!

I have got a 100ps tddi and the metering solenoid is leaking on that. The solenoid to buy is £235 if I do it myself, or a garage want £400+vat to supply and fit. It still runs good as gold though, pulls well fully loaded and is doing 34mpg driven steady.

New pumps are around £700 on eBay, not sure if they are virgin ones that don't need coding or you need to get it coded after fitting.

Gavin.

what are you gonna do in it?
if its an on teh side this i woudl look out for a peopel carrier
something reasonable like a scenic
loeads about well looked after for a grand or less and you can fit loads in teh back and rack it too and its sensivble to drive

ive driven ivecos, maxxis, connects and millions of trannys and now the wife has a scenic i can pj if i wanted to in that if i needed to i have a 10 plate tranny atm but my old 57 plate was/is pretty shitted up after i drove it like i did for 30k, if you get an abused van it will be horrivble to drive and look after
i treat my vans like shit and thats what they turn to whatever van it is
i do like a transit jumbo tho, underpriced for the type cos most people dont want something that big but you get the same drive and potential to move bigger things
i had 1 that jumped a bridge every day to work and back, it was ace

i missed a 51 plate tranny that was £800 non runner (was flat battery after grand kid kept heating the plugs) went back next day and it was gone, see it weekly now GRRR

I bought a Petrol DOHC Tourneo for 500 quid Cracking motor, most are 8 valve like mine
Will be lots of Diesels heading away from London cheap when the Low Emission Zone kicks in
