2.1 Zetec Turbo Piston Orientation query
just been looking back through a few posts by the likes of Roosie and PhilM and noticed that their vauxhall pistons are the other way round to what i would have thought was correct.
heres PhilM's engine with XE pistons
heres Roosie's with LET pistons
Not saying they are wrong, just want to know if ive just got the idea wrong in my head.
should the large valve cutouts not be on the inlet side of the block, so as to accomodate the larger head of the inlet valves? and then the smaller cut outs at the exhaust side of the block, to allow for the smaller diameter exhaust valves.
or does it not matter with the calibra turbo pistons as they are about 1-2mm lower than deck height, so the valves may never even come close to the piston once the head gasket is between block and head?
help that sorts out my confused head appreciated

the gudgeon pins through the pistons are offset so that the pistons do not knock and make noise so if you look at the crank and is moving clockwise the pistons should be fitted with the offset to the left.
or just look in the burton power cat its got a pic of it in there

oooh... saucer of milk... saucer of milk
dunno how much graft it will be yet, plan is to complete the engine build, then try it in the car. clio engine is narrower than the zetec by a fair bit so we shall see.
But even if it doesnt fit i will have completed something ive been wanting to do since i had my moondust frst 2 yrs ago by building a zetec turbo.
but overall i'd love to see it go in the clio, cos the chassis is great and it'd be different to all the gt turbo transplants that clios have done

why didnt you go for a 172 turbo engine i even saw an rsi turbo lump on ebay a few months ago and that went for peanuts.
have you even thought about what box to use flywheel clutch ect

172 engine would be too much hassle for the gains, be better off turbo'ing the williams engine i got in at the moment. problems with decent clutches and gearboxes for renault as well as lack of support. was mid way thru a clio turbo project last year on a 1764cc 16v engine, fabricated a manifold etc for the turbo, but abandoned it cos i got a motorbike.
gonna use erst box with frst flywheel and frst management.
out of curiosity have you seen the price of some of the kits etc to convert these 172 engines to turbo engines? have a look on ktec and bb tunings website, plenty of coin for them.
but like i said, part of the project was to simply build the turbo engine, wether it goes in my clio or not i will still have learnt and enjoyed the whole thing. if it doesnt i can always put it in a mates fiesta rst

true and it can always go in like a cheap fxr2i for a bit of fun if it dont go to plan.
if you wanted to do a lo commpression engine for the clio why not go for cosworth managment and fit a copper head gasket and get a manifold fabricated to take the t3 turbo. it would work out cheaper doing it that way.
if you fit the frst box you may need to have the right driveshafts made to fit.
clearence problems ect if i was you stick to the original motor and put the zetec into a ford i know it seems a bit harsh but it will save you money in the long run if you sit back and think about it

would deffo require custom drive shafts with the zetec engine in clio, as they would need to be the right length and have renault splines on the outer end and ford on the inner, to attach to the cv joints.
already said i had a manifold for my clio turbo engine
was a bit rough as it was a trial build, but the second version wouldve been ideal.
here it is in the car
