Default EGT probe fitting and wideband sensor

I just found out that my ecu is already equipped with a thermocouple connection.

I've noticed the T4 has a bung fitted in the exhaust housing which I presume it from a previous EGT proble being installed there.

Rather than just stick it in there I thought I'd ask for a expert opinion on where to fit it.

Also whilst thinking about exhaust sensors I've got a wideband sensor to install but due to the strange routing of the exhaust I am very limited on where it can go.

In the picture you can see the downpipe heads off into the wing and it then turns 90 degrees downwards then 90 degrees again into the side exit silencer. I remember being told not to fit a wideband probe on a curve of a exhaust and the only straight section is obviously between the 2 90 degree pipes, is there a particular place where I should mount it in that pipe.

Any help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't fit a egt probe before the turbo in the exhaust housing just incase (and it prob wouldn't happen) it broke as it would take the exhaust wheel

Just in the down pipe for both of them, couple of inches down would do

What wideband sensor are you using?

Would you say on the straight part of the downpipe though Jim ? I read or was maybe told something about the gasses taking the fastest route through a exhaust so as I'll need to mount them on the side of the downpipe you can see is it all possible the readings could be slightly incorrect ? bit of a arse about way of explaining it but hopefully you understood that !

As for the sensor, Its a AEM kit with their own supplied sensors which are reported to be very good.

Coming in load and clear! Lol

I'd put it just before the first turn so just after the turbo really

Iirc they say arund 6 inches after turbo

So either that or as you say, in that straight before it exits down the wing,

I don't think it makes massive difference where it is tbh

Thanks Jim, thought I would atleast ask before I start drilling holes in the downpipe !

surely the question of where to mount the sensor should depend on what you want to measure and why ?

i have thought about an egt gauge but not being able to put it in the manifold always makes me think the reading in the down pipe after the hot turbo must make the reading nothing like what it is straight out the engine

as long as you use a proper inconel thermocouple pre-turbo there is no chance of that melting before your pistons

Thanks Nick, it obviously had something like that at one point.

it would go in the exhaust manifold so before the turbo not pistons

I think what he means is that the pistons would melt before the probe does and ends up in the turbo

Also the bung in the manifold is in the turbo elbow, not the turbo itself.

To keep things on the safe side I'll mount it after the turbo though, I dont even want to know how much a inconel sensor would be !
