as theres only 1 key with my GF's car, would changing out the lock set make a difference apart from having 2 keys?

even if u bought a lock set you still gonna have to go through the procedure of paying to get the new ones re-coded as they dont come 'ready to go' even though its a brand new lock set so cheapest option is get 2 keys cut and reprogrammed for your existing locks

Not really mate.

Probably cost about 10 - 15 quid for a key and you there are places that can program a key for you.

Not sure on costs but you will have to get keys programmed if you change the lock set.

Why go to all the hassle of doing that when you can just get another key done?

cheers lads, was hoping i could get round getting a new key cut, but i kinda knew the programming bit would block it

my mates dad who works in a ford garage was mentioning some prices the other night £££, i don't really want to go to a dealer

i did phone up a locksmith and he said it depended on the key we have as to whether he can copy it or not

The keys can be quite badly worn but any decent auto locksmith should be able to get it sorted for you.

There's either red or blue coloured chip covers, the blue being the later ones.

When I used to work for a Ford dealer, we used to just use the WDS diagnostic system to do program the keys (don't know what system they use now, I left in 2004).

Neither were any different or harder than the other to do iirc.

Re your thread the other day you simply need to get another key cut, you seem to be wanting to complicate the issue. The new key won't be to expensive to cut and it is DIY to program.

The tab is simply the transponder, the colour I guess denotes the different generations as said.

The red master key I was talking about is for older PATS systems found on older Fords, just saying out of interest nothing to do with yours

i'm not trying to complicate the issue, sorry if thats what it looks like.

after reading your post from the other thread (above) you mentioned you just need the 1 key, which is great, then you mentioned you need a paired key, which has probably confused me a wee bit.

but thanks for your input & info

i used to chap in nails for a living, so left the car mechanicing for others

No problem, by paired I mean a key that is already paired to the car, I.E your current key, so long as you have this you are able to program (Pair) the new key yourself.

he only has one key so cant do the simple diy method himself, if he had the solid red key he could, but only black with red dot so it needs a proper reprogramming

I thought that was for older PATS? I can do it on systems with the blue transponder, but I know he has the red transponder and so I guess red transponder=Older PATS system which had red master key?

yep thats correct martin, red dot in key = red master key and older pats system. Unfortunatley he needs the red key to enable 'slave' keys to be reprogrammed. otherwise its a machine job
