Default Mondy ST220

So...

They seem to be good value at the moment.

2003/2004 for £5500 ish and down to £3200 for an 02 car.... with 60k ish on the clock

So anything that anyone needs to be worried about particularly?

Jake

Not really, just that they're called ST220 rather than ST200 mate...

i think you mean st220

there good motors to be honest. don't have the inlet problams the 2.5 has but i think they can still spin shells. imho regular oil changes with good quality oil, keep it topped upto the max and all will be well. they are certainly a fair bit cheaper than the 2.2 tdci's (or they were last time i looked).

i think the timing chain can stretch and wear the sprockets out (as they can on any car) and i think i've read the tensioner can give up on higher millage cars so its worth doing that. along with the water pump etc. don't know specific millages but i'd do it before th 90k mark just for peace of mind.

Things to check (I've just picked one up)

1. Listen for wheel bearing noise - these can go quite easily.
2. Knocking sounds from front and rear suspension - rear subframe bushes and front control arms are the main culprits
3. Moosing - caused by a split in the air intake hoses.
4. Sagging rear bumpers on the 55 plate models onwards. This is caused by Ford implementing cost cutting measures. Two foam supports underneath the rear bumper were removed, which results in the bumper dropping slightly. If you can slide your smallest finger in the gap, then it's time to fix the problem. Helpfully, Ford have decided to stop selling the foam supports!
5. Finally - Electrics. Theres a lot of them depending on the specification level, so take the time to make sure they work.

Try to get a facelift model (53 plate onward) if possible as they have the revised interior and more kit such as auto lights/ wipers etc. Also try and get the best spec, the only cost options where touchscreen sat nav (good system!), xenon lights and rear parking sensors so look out for a car with all these fitted.
The only other known problem on the 3.0 petrols apart from those already mentioned I can think of is look out for an oily sump, this will be the sump gasket (easy fix) or the rear crank seal (hard fix!)
Oh and go for the estate version

Steve

I really really rate these. A friend has one and it's lovely to drive; really quiet and refined when you're just pootling about, but really great fun when you want it to be.

Seems to handle very very well, and feels pokey, revs nice and freely too. I think I'd try and go for the facelift, as above, as they seem a bit better specced, but they're all good really.

I'd definately have one

yer mine on 34000 miles and its third engine u really gotta watch oil pump, also keep toped up with oil, also starter motor went on mine at 30000miles 360 fitted at ford apart from that really top motor does everything u need a bit thirsty if u boot it also make sure its got the continetal tyres on as theres not a lot of feedback with outher tyers and the road noise is a lot quiet not a lot of noises come, ing from cabin yet so still sweak free for a 04 o yer make sure the clutch is o,k as these are a costly fix

bought mine on a 02 plate 4yrs ago with 17k on the clock, its now got 98k on the
clock and still runs like a dream, had to change the original dual mass flywheel and
clutch 2k miles ago, the only other problems i've had was the said split in breather
hose and changed the rear subframe bushes at 75k.

go for the early 5 speed cars cos they are faster than the later 6 speed versions
unless you want all the pointless toys like auto lights and wipers lol.

Cracking cars but damn thirsty. I've had a 52 plate and currently a 55 plate 6 speeder.

Personally feel the 6spd is a bit quicker tbh and better ratio's. 3 - 4th is ace.

Handle great, look great, go pretty well, top spec etc....

Love how you can drive effortlessly slow in any gear or drive like a lunatic when you want a blast. Also got two sprogs so good compromise on a big comfy family car and handling, looks, and power.

Might have to get the st tdci eventually tho cus it pisses me of fuelin the thing.

Cheers ears..

So basically standard bullet proof reliability you'd expect from a mondeo and usual fly wheel bollocks.

Thats what I had - an 03 plate - 6k on it and I got rid at 86k in 20 months that was...

I honestly thought it was amazing for the abuse it had...

Rear bed bushes, starter motors, timing chain tensioner problems, front link/stabiliser bar joints, handbrake cables and rear caliper seizure. front wheel bearings. Cheapo interior and general all round poor paint finish, poor fuel economy, low torque output.

They seem a good car but round my way dont bring any money. Was at the auction the other day and one on an 04 came through and the vendor finally let it go at £2400 as it had been there a few weeks. and someone I went to school with had one on an 06 and it only brought £3200 on ebay but they didnt let it go at that as it didnt meet reserve. he was thinking he'd get 6 k for it. Hads lots of problems with theirs though and was always at main dealers

Realy, i think the interior in the ST220 is far from cheapo.
as for fuel economy, if you want good fuel economy you wouldnt buy a V6 anyway.
i think the torque is quite good considering it hasnt got a turbo.
