be careful of your license and what it allows, well other than for a frames as they are illegal anyway, lol

right been told this before, now according to my local trailer training centre i been told that i can drive a 3.5t vehicle with a trailer no bigger than 750kg's or i can tow a trailer bigger than 750kg's aslong as the trailer doesnt weigh more than the vehicle pulling it and the total combined weight is no more than 3.5t.

More or less correct.

Just bear in mind that the 3.5 tonne includes the MAM of the tow car not the weight of the tow car, and same for the MAM of the trailer.

So a 1300kg car with a MAM of 1800 towing a trailer weighing 700kg with a MAM of 1700kg is legal

But a 1300kg car with a MAM of 1900 towing a trailer weighing 700kg with a MAM of 1700kg is illegal

and a 1300kg car with a MAM of 1800 towing a trailer weighing 700kg with a MAM of 1900kg is illegal

etc etc

Basically you will really struggle to find a combination of car and trailer that allow you to two with on your license legally unless its a very light car you are towing

I thought they were shit for towing tbh, well on normal roads, M'ways etc

I had a TD5 W reg and like it but when on the motorway it had to be dropped into fourth for the slightest of hills.

My ST200 tows better than the TD5 ever did.

No offence, but I think your TD5 was fucked my mates old td5 used to happily tow over a ton at motorway speeds (and above) all day long...

Omega td. Transit would have to be a 150 or 190 to tow legally.
I have a t330, but it cost more than a grand.

Grand Cherokee LPG are great tools, could get one around a grand or so,not sure if it would be LPG though and then your looking 15mpg at best.

Disco are crap and you'll be continually working on it,total rubbish, rotboxes.

How about a passat tdi or even an audi 100 estate?tough buggers them.

if your not to worried about fuel, go v6 ford galaxy 4x4, cheap as chips, a mate has a diesel one for towing and if does good, but the v6 2wd or 4x4 i guess would be even better, and with seats out they are huge inside.

i passed my test before the cut off for towing a trailer, last week i was towing a reasonably sized proper ifor williams new car trailer on the motorway with my 04 tdci 130 bhp mondeo.the police (not traffic) went past and didnt look twice at me.didnt think i was breaking the law, well maybe a little.the mondeo is a brilliant tow car, plenty grunt at all speeds, mine has the 6 speed box but i think if i was going to be towing a lot just to be on the safe side id be looking for something like an l200 or something like that.

just remember dollys and Aframes are to be used for recovery purposes only NOT delivering or collecting of vehicles and as said in above posts make sure your licence allows you to tow

Galaxy would be ideal,I know for a cheapy derv one which is well maintained but has done 200k,looks alright too,red,7 seater nice alloys etc, roof bars, towbar already fitted.think the guy wants £800?t&t of course.

Avoid l200/navara if your soley towing, their horrendous on juice and the back end is to light and tends to wander a bit with a heavy load on.

And they are only legal for recovering to the nearest place of safety, which means the first layby or non double yellow bit of road you get to, so you cant say "im recovering it" as you are towing it up the motorway past junction after junction on your way to or from a trackday!

No, they area just completely illegal fullstop irrelevant of weight, except for very specific circumstance (as per my reply above)
The only exception is where the MAM of the car, plus the weight of the a-frame, totals less than 750kg, which as far as im aware applies only to the Axiam out of all cars made in the last couple of decades.

anything else on an a frame is illegal for anything other than recovery to the nearest point of safety (safety meaning from somewhere illegal to somewhere legal to park)

Well I have my class1 articulated licence. Not sure on the weight of the trailer as i'm yet to buy/borrow one, the main thing that concerns me is the fact that I can quite happily say that the Disco weighs more than the BMW lol

right so if i had say a mondeo that weighed 1400kg with a tow cap of 1400kg, i could tow a 500 kg trailer with a 1000kg capacity on? cars will be mk3/4 escorts and mk1/2 fiestas i'll be transporting, all under 1 tonne
