should rattle worse when you put the aircon on. petrol mondeos dont suffer as bad as diesel but petrols have a nasty rattle at about 2k this will proberly be the flaps in the inlet get them out or they with end up head butting a piston

if you hear a rumble low down it could be the crank pulley or aux belt tensioner, Ford say change both with a new belt but i didnt, just did the pulley.
Yes tdci's are worse than petrol mondys, mine was a tdci.

no the ribbed part of the pully is actually rubber mounted on to the steel inner part of the pully, so you have outer-rubber- inner, 3 parts, the rubber starts to destroy itself then you get the rumble.
Another great idea from Ford

Not a rumble but looked at a mk1 mondy 2l petrol that had a crack crack noise when cold, think it might be a good idea to have a close look at the pulleys, thanks for the piccies on this thread.

If it's pictures you want, or for those that don't know what they look like or just for reference should it be needed, here are the ones that just came off my ST TDCi:
Gates auxiliary belt kit:

![](http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx69/fredbloggsstuff2/Mondeo/Aux%20Belt/DSC_3100.jpg)

The garage that did it took about 2.5 hours to fit it all and it's made the engine so much quieter!

I think my tensioner is on its way out ask it squeeks sometimes and i think its the original with nearly 140k on it.
IS the tensioner and pulley the same on all diesel mondeo's? Mine is a 2.0L TDDI mondeo. It looks very similiar to the pictures

I had my local garage buy the bits (so if they fail within a year, they'll replace them FOC) but I think the Pulley was about Ł60 and the Tensioner kit was about Ł100. They come separately, hence why the pulley was in a different box. The parts shown come in the boxes below for a part number.
That kit is the same for the 2.0 and the 2.2L like mine.

When I bought mine, the aux belt jumped about on the top most visible pulley on the left of the engine. (Got some money off the sale because of it
) and it made a racket especially when cold on idle.
That could have been caused by the worn lower crank pulley or the tensioner, or both. If you only replace one or the other, you might wear the new part prematurely and possibly bring to fail the un-replaced part. Best to be safe and get the whole lot done to be sure. Mines now super smooth and quiet, well... as much as a diesel can be. lol
I was thinking that if the crank pulley is buggered, could this be putting more stress on the other end of the crankshaft, i.e. the fabled Clutch / Dual mass flywheel, by not absorbing the vibrations that it's supposed to?

Ordered all the parts and should be here tommorrow. They had the pulley in stock and just needed to get the gates kit.
My alternator was new not so long as so that will be everything new on that end of the engine. Might do the power steering pump belt as it looks a bit tatty and could do with being changed.
One quick question is? Do you take the pulley off teh end of teh camshaft to get that belt off? I have never really looked at it properly but there is no tensioner on it is there?
