Do any of you 'anti-holiday-in-term-time' people actually teach your kids yourself, or do you think that's the school's job?
Not meant as an argumentative point (I know a teacher who doesn't read with her kids because the school does). I just can't help thinking what you do with your kids differs to what we do, as I genuinely can't see how a handful of days off can possibly be considered detrimental to the child's development.

I don't necessarily teach. I do what parents should do and assist and guide where possible.
Number 1 does quite "technical" writing now for an 11 year old and if i can help him with new words etc then so be it.
Number 2 has just started school and is LOVING it. He is like a sponge. Today i got a big surprise to learn that the letter "b" isn't written like i was taught! We used to do the down stroke then back upwards and a clockwise loop. Now they are being taught to do the downstroke and continue into an anti clockwise loop to finish.
Teaching at home is all very well but watch and get it right!

My Oldest (4 years old) has not missed one day of school and loves it (for the time being lol) she has come in to me and the wife and said
"my tummy hurts"
I say "what enough to stop you going to school"
She says
"of course not Daddy"
If i was to say from day 1
"OH NO we better not send you to school"
and she has a day off and realises what fun it is being lazy and sitting infront of the telly all day maybe she might want to get sick more often
If you catch my drift.
Although saying someones parenting is not right (only in my opinion of course) normally pisses people off that think it is right. as eveyone thinks they know best with their kids. Me included!
but he's only been going for 14 days so plenty more to come
the rest of it i do agree with though, if only for the reason that we'd have to take a day off if he didn't go to school

then he gets a book to read every week and, as he's only 4, we have to read it to him and he looks at the pictures and follows the story, after which, we, as parents, have to write up a short summary of what he felt the book was about, if he enjoyed it, etc

wow turned into a bitching contest
i see chips point, but as having two kids one 5 an one 13 months we are tight for cash so no choice but to go away in term time. stephen i think they are bit out of order an i will be a waiting my fine when we go lmao but in all fairness i dont see how they can charge you, as you told them an your daughter took the work she'd be missing with her. try contacting them but dont be snotty generally explain that she never missed anything. i doubt the school will know as its probably come direct from the governors even have a word with the head of the school see what there advice is
good luck

junior gets homework which we have to supervise him as he does it, so that's one
then he gets a book to read every week and, as he's only 4, we have to read it to him and he looks at the pictures and follows the story, after which, we, as parents, have to write up a short summary of what he felt the book was about, if he enjoyed it, etc

Lets just hope though that StephenC leaves the teaching of his kids to lala and tinky winky etc, rather than muscle in and teach them a crock of shite himself thinking he's being accurate when he isnt

After all kids of a young age learn FAR more from copying and imitating than from any other means, and your setting a pretty shit example about the importance of school to just rip them out of it for a week or two.
Maybe you manage to explain to your kids that its only those two weeks that are totally worthless and the other 37 weeks of term time actually count, or maybe you just think you do, hard to say really!

LOL, thats genius, I still do it the old less efficient way, mind you my writing is fucking terrible anyway as I learnt to type when I was 7 and have barely used hand writing since relatively speaking, I find it really tedious as its so much slower, can probably type 100 words a minute but probably only write about 30, lol

I find writing very strange now as in adult life you barely need to do it!
I need to check my sons book and see if d is done the same way but mirrored. I'd expect so but...
I prefer when they have the "tail" at the bottom!
I guess i'll check p also

couldnt agree more, they sampled a foreign country and its inhabitents and we had the best holiday weve ever had together, they'll remember that for the rest of their lives, the PE lessons they missed I somehow doubt they will. The majority of academic work they missed at school was dealt with on holiday and the remainder as homework when they got back.

But if you read the thread you would realise I didnt actually build it anyway, so its not in anyway representative of what I would do myself.
Im far more a self proclaimed expert at winding idiots who take a bit of banter on the internet too seriously than I am a scientist even by the way, lol
Chip chose for some reason to assume that as it was past tense I would have forgotten how to read?
That sentence to me in no way implies such horse shit
unless I wanted to be an awkward self righteous prick in which case I would assume such a thing and contrive it to mean so in the vain attempt it would make me look good.

Do not think missing a week would not make much of a difference for your kid, kid's, as the social interaction with new pepole would help them lot's in later life.
There is someone i went to school with, she was one of the smart one's at school and now she is a recluse

not at all, it just means that you chose to assume something, for a change.

I just like things to be accurate whoever says them, if Im right i'll keep repeating it until the other person realises, if Im wrong I'll gracefully accept so. Like this thread earlier today for example:

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
Alot of the kids at my youngest's school all have dads in the army. (Theres a local barracks).
One of the mums was telling me a couple of weeks back that they get a special exception for holidays as the dads are away for months at a time which I think is understandable but were saying how bollox it is that you cant take a 'normal' child out of school. After that she told me that there's some law etc that states that a child can have up to 10 days a year. So check it out!!!!!!!

No, it means nothing of the sort.
The sentence you wrote included the word 'been' when it should have said 'being'. Using 'been' does not infur any tense, it's just wrong, wrong like people using brought, not bought. No amount of Googling or arguing will make it right. Ever.
The sentence I wrote is a generalisation of my life and I used the word has to put a definite quantity on the past time that I was refering to as obviously there was a time where I couldnt read nor write. Chip chose for some reason to assume that as it was past tense...

This thread is becoming ridiculous.if were all being so clever about spelling, terminology etc why are we calling children "kids",I always thought kids were baby goats but hey ho.
Well done chip for only missing 5 days of school over x number of years, but be honest, when you were in junior school in June fucking about as everyones in holiday mode, can you REALLY remember what you were learning at that time?very little I should imagine.
We took our boy out of school on three occasions for two weeks at a time which we were allowed to do when he was 5,7 and 11 and he hasn't become a total retard who's now unable to write his own name or string a sentence together,he's studying his gcse's now like all the other pupils,a lot of whom have taken time off as well at the best school in the area, the same school I went too.
If anyone on here genuinely believes that missing a week or two of school to go on a relaxing break when it's quieter and you actually get to enjoy things without crowds of idiots around you is detrimental to your childrens well being then I personally believe your wrong.
It's just another labour tax that they levied on people under the guise of education to make it credible,a lot like any of this environmental bullshit that's pressed upon us by environMENTALISTS etc.
Lessons are learnt in all areas of life, not just school.think back to your childhood, what do you remember most, double maths or a great holiday with your family?
I never went anywhere with my parents,my father was a golfer who saw fit to have three holidays with his mates rather than one for the whole family.my sister, being born in august regularly got to go away with her mates in the summer under the guise of her birthday present.my mother and myself only went away once skiing when I was 12 and Ill always remember that rather than the weeks education I lost in 1988!!
Both points are valid IMHO,education is important but so is relaxation time with your family, whenever that time maybe, ffs if you told the school you were taking a week off to help the pakistanis dry off their clothes from the flood they'd probably pay for you to go out there!!!!

If its cars you are specifically looking to talk about why not try one of the dozens of rooms that are specifically about cars to read instead?
Did you really open a post titled "£50 fine for taking kids on holiday!!" and expect it to be about the maximum safe % at which to run injectors without risking overheating the drivers in an omex 710 ecu?

dont think people are looking for trouble, they'res just some people who like to bull themselves up and make themselves feel important. Luckily for us, the people with common sense, we see straight through the act and can only imagine just how fucking boring that person must be.

well i am carefull with this one. But a 5day's is a bit much. But if you saved so much money just pay the fine. Its only 50. When you try to take your kids 5days from school here you get an school inspector on your ass and the fine is much much higher then that 50 you have to pay. Here it can go up the 1000's.
