where are all the xr3s and rs1600 at?

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
you might find an rs1600 but most of the xr3's seem to have long gone, amazing when you think how many they must have sold in the 80's. All rusted away, unloved, and crushed.
Unless you look in the resto section, a few have survived...

16i is a rare car in good nick these days, quite a few snotters around but some nice ones if you look hard. Being limited in numbers even when new means some parts are very hard to come by. Cool cars

IF youre lucky you might find Huw mungus has an RS1600i some where in his collection, but i warn you now, it WILL be mint and you'll be hard pushed to find a better one.
He has the odd car up for sale every now and then, having know Huw a very long time i know what his standards are and they are very high.

i imagine a fair few xr3s were probably made into a series 1 turbo and or are now just rusted away and crushed a long time ago where the person broke the car rather than sell it.

Oddly enough for the german market, my dads did not have the rear fogs wired up but easily fixed, it was a rhd car, TT 605 B was the reg.

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
this is far sale, i don't know the guy or the car.... advert nicked this from the rsoc site
This car is was built to very near concourse standard, but i have used it, having said that with a bit of a clean you could happily enter any concourse event and possibly win !!!
It was restored early 2009, due to a lady in a merc reversing into the driver side wing! It started off as a quick tidy up and soon turned into a full restoration.
The car was stripped to a bare shell, all of the sealer was removed from underneath (using scotch pads and solvents, leaving the factory primer in place), and every last bit of rust cut out and replaced with new metal (not ground out and filled like most) we replaced the front cross member as this had been welded previously, new wings, front panel, and scuttle as there were two pin pricks around the wiper holes, and the usual battery tray (which is removable to allow proper cleaning underneath), along with various other small repairs bottom of rear arches/valance, both doors were replaced with rot free ones as they had started to blister in the corners. One of the chaps who helped ran a body shop in Exeter and is very anal in the detail, all bare metal was zinc or copper primed before it was welded to prevent further corrosion in the future, and a spot welder was used where it should be rather than plug welding panels on.
New sealer was sprayed on the underneath and in the arches to replicate what ford had done then I had two coats of two pack primer and then painted silver and lacquered.
The shell was then taken to a body shop and fully prepped before being given a professional paint job inside and out to a very high standard, everything was wax oiled (clear) before it was put back together.
The engine was partially stripped and checked, shells bores etc, it ran fine and had good compression before and produced 111bhp on rollers so nothing major was required, I fitted a brand new head I had in the loft when I bought it a couple of years ago so I new that was fine, it was put back together with new oil and water pumps, gaskets, seals etc the gearbox was stripped and rebuilt with new diff bearings etc by south west transmissions and a new clutch fitted before it was all put back together, then all the usual, plugs, filters oil cam belt & tensioner.
Every nut and bolt and fixing bracket etc was sent off to SMB plating in Plymouth and zinc plated (yellow/gold, silver and black)
All the suspension components, fuel tank etc were sand blasted and powder coated or painted (two pack).
Alloy parts, rocker, inlet manifold, anti roll bar mount gearbox mounts etc, were blasted, clear etched and satin lacquered to retain the original colour.
New parts fitted:
Full set of polybushes
Steering rack
Track control arms
Track rod ends
All 4 wheel bearings
Gearbox and engine mounts
RS Turbo discs & callipers (260mm) & brake pads
Rear wheel cylinders, drums and shoes
Fuel Pump
Braided flexi brake lines
Hand brake cables
Clutch
Clutch cable
Throttle cable
Speedo cable
Fuel and Brake pipe clips underneath the car
Windscreen
Fuel filter oil filter (gen ford)
Part of the fuel pump cradle (stainless)
Exhaust rubbers
New VIN plate (from ford, old one looked tatty still have it tho)
Under bonnet sticker kit
Battery
Brake master cylinder
Spark plug leads from the coils (have originals with blue rubbers)
4 new Yokohama A539s
Cobra Thatcham approved alarm immob (with certificate)
Im sure there is more but I just cant remember
It has 5 original motorsport 909 RS1600i wheels fully refurbed and a D40 on the spare.
The list goes on, and on, I have kept all the receipts and have a massive history file to go with the car, including all the details of previous owners, the car belonged to several RSOC members inc Simon Pearce, I think he was with Bristol /Swindon or Somerset group, on the whole it had been very well looked after by all the previous owners
The interior is in very good condition no rips or tears the seats are very firm and not saggy like so many, everything works as it should, has central locking and electric windows and no cracks in the dash!
It is standard apart from a K&N panel filter, Larini stainless exhaust system(exact copy of original), the S2 front brakes and it had an after market sunroof fitted at some point in its life all works fine and doesn't leak.
It was built to very near concourse standard but I am not really into that side of it and have used it, having said that a day on the ramp and a wipe off underneath you wouldn't be far off.
I am looking for Ł6495 and don't feel this is too unreasonable looking at what has been for sale recently.
I have some spares to go with it, 2 more genuine wheels, ecu's crank sensor lead and a few coils, plus some switches and small interior parts.
The photo's do not do this car the justice it deserves, i have taken loads but am no professional, so have put up the best ones.
There are resto threads on here, 16i on tour site and on our club site (www.obviouslyford.co.uk) and I have a cd full of pics of what was done.
Car will be at National Day on registra's stand providing its not sold before then.

I love Mk3 escorts and will have another one day. I'm also tinking XR3 non injection this time, having owned and restored 2 RS1600is it will be time for a change, and having owned 41k miles b308FAV which is worth around 12k now i would never pay that for one to get one equvilent, so xr3 seems the good choice, love prairie yellow but doubt id find one.
heres my old black 16i, if i had more room at my house i would never have sold this.
And my white one

Got any piccies, my dads 1980 xr3 was also 4 speed, remember it was Ł2900(forces discount) when first out ordered a midnight blue but not in time so went for a ex demo(300 miles) in stratos(?) silver, I like the XR3 better than the i, had much better style imo.
Oddly enough for the german market, my dads did not have the rear fogs wired up but easily fixed, it was a rhd car, TT 605 B was the reg.

Most 3dr mk3 escorts have been turned into rs donors now, which is sad.

White car was nice but not stunning, black one was concours but never my first choice colour for an RSi as the black parts on bumpers etc dont stand out enough. White is my fave colour, followed by caspian blue, grey, silver, black then red.

there used to be a yellow xr3 in the town where i live,a good few years ago a couple got married and when away on honeymoon their friends dug a huge hole in their back garden and pushed the xr3 into it so it was almost sitting on its nose and the back end was sticking out of the hole.that was definately prairie yellow.its funny how things that are horrible when new become sought after laaater due to rarity!

Yeah mate, neighbours generally hand over thier land for you to build on!
I extended it as wide as i could when i first moved here, it is a large singe, 4m wide but any wider would have blocked kitchen window! I am in the process of maybe buying a strip of land off the neighbour to build it wider to the other side though making it a double
