Default Steering rack shat its pants last night

03' Gt tdi 150 - mk4 golf.

First quote £600 for new rack - excl fitting

Second recon option £180 - excl fitting

Or

Take a punt on a £50 s/h item from breakers?

I'm leaning towards the recon, but would like to know what you would do??

Tom

PS The labour will be free as i'm going to replace it at a friends garage

Hi Dan,

Thats promising - about the 2hrs - i thought it might take much longer.

If its not an uncommon problem i'll avoid second hand ones as i dont fancy doing it twice and wasting more annual leave.

Do you know if recon racks are 'tighter' too, or do they just get new seals etc? Mine is/was spot on, and it would be a right kick in the giggle berries if i got a refurbed one that wasn't..?

Cheers

Tom

To my knowledge no, but i had only had the golf 2 wks, and the drive is gravel...

I plan on keeping it for at least a couple of years....

It went on 108k, but until recently i had a passat on 149k that hadn't to my knowledge had anything major go on it, but for every story of this nature there are a million others countering it...

I'm awaiting a call from the local recon place...
