Clutch dragging by the sounds of things. If you're sat still in neutral, hand brake off, put foot on the clutch and force it into first, does the van creep forward?

Edit...just re read, yes it does!

Except this is a K plate Transit with a cable.

I'd say there is either a problem with the clutch itself or the release arm. The pivots used to have a habit of coming out of the gearbox too.

my transit had the same problem it was a M reg 95 .turned out to be the ratchet behind the clutch pedal.

It's not the gearbox.

Clutch ratchets only used to slip in my experience, usually at the lights causing you to have to fight them to a stop or to prevent you from ramming someone if you was still in gear. Good thing about the Transit clutch ratchet is it can be changed in about 10 minutes unlike the car equivelents!

They had 2 sizes of clutch one of which was 267mm diameter (heavy duty). These where fitted mainly to the turbo diesels but also onto some of the chassis cabs if they were intended to do a lot of towing (E.G plant hire companies or utility companies). Chances are you will have the standard duty clutch but at least you know about the other clutch if you find it's wrong.

Ratchet is only 10 minutes work! It's on the pedal so your answer is no!

Gearbox takes about half an hour the flip out with air tools and a ramp. 10 mins to swap the clutch and another half hour to throw the box back in.

9 times out of 10 a dragging clutch is usually the clutch itself though so be prepared to extract the gearbox.

Another word of advice, usually I used to find a dragging clutch was some of the fingers on the pressure plate had gone weak so when you pressed the clutch, the pressure didn't release off the spinner plate fully. Every so often though, I'd find the little ball pivot at the end of the release arm in the bell housing had come loose in the housing. Usually a bit of a beating with a hammer and centre punch to swell the metal and some locktite cured this problem and stopped it coming out again.
