Took a deposit on my 350Z yesterday so on the lookout for a replacement. Am tempted to go for an Audi S4 Avant (B6) as I need something fairly large for the next 6 months (kitchen and garden being done so need plenty of boot space!).
What other alternatives are out there that are similar to the S4's, with regards to performance and practicality? Budget around 10k - 14k.

cjwood - looked at most of them but dont think any of them are overly quick, or matched to an S4? (correct me if i'm wrong!)
rog - Would like an M5 but I need boot space with the rear seats folded down to fit lengths in. Shame as I've had an E39 530 sport in the past and loved it!!

Hmmm that could be a problem!
Not a Vauxhall buff myself but what about this, and it's fairly new.

Fasterfords - not really mate, i'd like to spend around the 10 mark ideally but have extra money about to go a bit higher!
bristol fez - dont think the rear seats fold on a later 5 series do they?

If you're gonna be lugging loads of stuff around, a 2001/2 Audi a6 2.7t avant would be a good buy and they're cheap, for 4k you could get a 6 speed manual with loads of space in the back, a quick remap and it'll not be far off the s4 for performance. Why spend 10k on a car that you're gonna end up scratching and marking with bits of wood, soil or rubble!

gotta decide what it is you want the car to do. is it your toy car or do you want something to chuck loads of crap in?
i'd be thinking about a 5 series estate, whatever the best you can get for that kinda money is... will depreciate fairly quickly tho.
i do like the look of that R34 estate i must say, but no idea if itd be any good or not

Jim, its a bit of both really mate, i want something practical but something I can still enjoy and get a bit of a grin driving it. Want creature comforts like aircon, leather, reliability, as well as something that I hopefully wont have trouble selling on. I like the 5 series estates but they must be soooo boring to drive?!
