a decent battery should hold its charge for at least 6 months, alarms draw very little current when in an armed mode. so i would investigate as to whether you have a problem with something flattening your battery?

if there are no issues, then machine mart is a good place for these devices, thats where i picked up one for my dads motorhome about a year ago

My saff spunks its battery in about 2 weeks if not used! the alarm dose it and i have a very small amp drain on the car. Im useing a 15 pounds halfords charger on it and it dose just as good a job as my 90 pounds bike one! AND THERE IS NO WAY A BATTERY WILL LAST 6 MOUNTHS WITH AN ALARM ON IT LOL if your alarm had a 0.1 amp drain your 70 amp battery will last 29 days! (amp hour rateing /amp drain / 24 hours )

Got one of the solar powered ones from maplins that seems to be ok and I've got a halfords one but that gets a little hot so it needs to be on some sort of timer system where it only charges for an hour or so at a time.

You DON'T want a trickle charger, this will harm your battery, you want a battery conditioner, the c tek are excellent, a while back lidl had some awsome ones on offer, for £15, all the insides were siemens so quality item, have one myself.
The battery conditioners do exactly that they cycle between charge and discharge, the added bonus is they most have a battery reconditioner circuit too, whiucb does work and can revive most "dead"(due to suplhate) batteries, but will exercise any battery to get it's best, although very low amps, due to the way they charge(pulse) they charge much quicker than conventional chargers.
These are TOTALLY safe and can be left on 20 years if you like, a constant trickle supply, unless by chance it matches precisely the draw will cause minor damage over time.
No way in a million years will a fully charge battery start a cossie after 6 months even if left disconnected, natural drain on a std lead acid, lead/calcium, or calcium/calcium is around 1% per day at ideal temps, a lot more if cold.
The other alternative is to get a AGM battery but £130 of thereabouts, but decent ones ie spirally wound have less than 3% loss per month, so may be a better bet as more convenient, and a huge amount more powerful too.
