Was Maradona just A CHEAT?

Was Maradona just A CHEAT?
As title really.
At the ripe old age of 27 i didn't really get to experience Maradonas best.
I dont remember it anyway...
Ive obviously seen highlights and the sort of goals but i don't feel i know enough about him.
Seems the more i look into it the more he comes across as just a cheat.
Obviously the hand of god and being banned twice for drug taking.
Whats the older generations views on this?

He was a quality player that should of been smashed on the halfway line for that goal and Shilton should of come out like a man and not a big girls blouse for the hand of god goal.
Imagine how good Maradona could of been without drugs and his head on straight.
Pele is still the greatest footballer ever, played with a lace in the ball, wooden studs and you could get smashed and the ref would play on.

I would go Pele 1 George Best 2 Maradona 3 but then todays footballers would have to be judged differently as the game has changed so much.

10K+ Poster!!
One of the greatest players ever imho, regardless of the cheating and drug taking. if were basing our opinion of him on his football skills, you cant argue he was every bit as good as his reputation

he was a cheat yes but he was one of the best
he virtually won argentina the 1986 by himself
he was addicted to cocaine since the early 80s,imagine how good he could of been with a clean living lifestyle

Maradona was pure class, and it was the first goal that was hand of god.everyone cheats at some point, remember squeaky clean Gary lineker diving for the two penalties as England struggled to beat Cameroon?Henrys handball was just as blatant against Ireland and no offence to the English but you're always looking for excuses as to why you fail in major tournaments, usually on penalties.sadly for England, they don't have a good enough keeper and most of the team don't actually have any interest other than collecting their ridiculous wages from their club sides, the world/euro cups just seem a hinerence to them.yes,I knownl I'm welsh so I'll probably never even get to experience going to a major championship but I won't be supporting England just like you wouldn't support Wales although i think the heat will be too much for them really.they've got a cracking team on paper but I think if Rooney gets injured/ sent off they'll really struggle.last sixteen or quarters at best but if they get to the final I reckon they'll win!!

This thread has nothing to do with england, We have done that subject to death and already put you wales/scotland boys in your place.
I thought hand of god goal was first, I could be wrong though

Diego Maradonna was a footballing Genius. Sadly, he couldn't handle being so famous and went absolutely conkers!
His handball in 86 was outshadowed by the goal he scored a couple of minutes later.
He will always be a Hero in Argentina, and Scotland

In terms of ability Maradonna was right up there no doubt but his career is tarnished because he career is also up there with Marion Jones and Dwayne Chambers, Mutu, Bosnich for the wrong reasons and in many ways worse. He was a coke head caught out more than once. He was cheating his fellow pro's.
Yes. Couple of bits on here if you want a look.

And wrongly. I was too young to remember but you can see what he did was much much worse than Henry. It wasn't a qualifier it was the quarter final of the world cup and he didn't just hand ball control it, he actually scored with it. Neither did he feel bad/sorry or ashamed like Henry or France did.
But still not a patch on the drug cheating though which some people glaze over because of the talent he had where as others have been ripped to bits.

Maradona no1 for natural ability for me, try and find the vids of him playing keep ups when he was a kid (10 or 11 years old) or when people keep chucking things at him to keep up, golf ball, orange, Water bottle, remember seeing Lineker talking about playing against him for england and maradona was in a world 11 team(some sort of charity match) and he said maradona was warming up before the game by kicking a ball 20ft in the air again and again without moving from the centre spot, Every single player just stood on the pitch in awe watching Maradona, inc Platini who at the time was europes best

Agree completely Skeg. Much worse the Henry. How the linesman missed it I'll never know. That should have been a kit-kat ad....
But, you have to admit, his 2nd goal was pure class. If it had been against anyone but your own team I'm sure you would agree. He was a genuis, but will be remembered for being a drug snorting nutter and probably, a totally hopeless manager
But don't get me started on Henry..... As someone from an Irish background, that pissed me right off. Cheating cheese eating surrender monkey

Although, I really hate him for scoring such an amazing goal, against Scotland........ The bastard
And thinking about it, I should have put all my replys into one reply.

I think football can sometimes be like old cars, For instance i used to think my xr2 was so quick, And when i remember it now i think god it was a quick car with great handling et etc.
Then i drove one and its rubbish!...

Good list, Luis Ronaldo is my favourite striker of all time I reckon, he was mint for PSV, Barcelona, Inter, Real (even when his big build went to fat) and Brazil.
Don't know about Giggs in an all time list though, obviously he kind of is and all players rate him highly, he's the most successful player in the world or one of up their with Portuguese keeper Victor Baia on trophies but Wales being Wales and no World cup appearance would cost him, sadly. To me he's still a footballing god though.

Again, his genius was overshadowed by his lunacy. Bit sad really, because when he was playing well he was brilliant. I don't think that things like that would happen now, as really amazing players are better looked after by their clubs with regards to drinking and drug taking problems. Some of the things that Gazza did were just fantastic.
