its a midrange spec really, so quite futureproof to you could maybe spend Ł100 less but going to be abit slow and run out of date abit quicker depends how much you want to spend mate

I bought a second hand dell about 5 years ago for Ł100, it was 3 years old at the time. Sold it a few months ago for Ł60 so can't complain. Was a bit slow when trying to make it do a few things, but for browsing net etc was spot on.

I'd recommend a dell for sure!

Lee,

You want a laptop for browsing the web and nothing too fancy:

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/acer-a...53053-pdt.html

Yes its an acer and everyone will get excited as its not HP or Sony but it will do for what you want

I've always just liked Dell. A lot of people complain about the fact they use the cheapest components, but I've had a Dell desktop for 8 years and a laptop for over a year now and neither have gone wrong once.

I like the fact you can just go on to the website, select exactly what you want, and a couple of days later it's at your door ready to use.

I have an Acer, although quite a well specced one, and it was 500 qiud. Does loads of things really well. Has a core duo processor, which is good apparently, 4 GB of Ram, which is also good apparently, and 360GB hard drive. Does everything, plays games, HD movies, has a bluray drive, makes my tea, is great at downloading porn from the internet etc etc etc

I could have spent 1k on a fancy big name laptop, but I'm really glad I didn't.... Laptops all have the same shit inside them, so why pay for a brand....

I await the flaming from the laptop experts..........

Acer's are great Rab - thats what I'm using now, and we have another two in the household. Never had any problems with any of them.

I have to admit mate, 2 years of abuse and mine is still spot on.

Unlike my old Compaq, which was fucked after 2 years.....

This is the one I've got. Paid Ł400 for mine back in January. Been been spot on so far although I've not really pushed the limit with it yet.

The acer i've got now is certainly not as well made as my old dell. Its only a couple of years old, hinge is all creaky, one of the buttons fell off the other day and the slide buttons at the front to turn the wireless on and off have both broken. The battery is already knackered too.

My old 8 year old dell was solid, fell off the sofa a couple of times and was as strong as the day it was new. I'm not saying the acer is a bad machine, but when it goes tits up, shall definately be going back to dell!

My Dell is solid as a rock too!! Knocked it off my knee a few times, and once sat on the screen a little and bent it the wrong way. It's still going strong. Oh, and most nights I throw it from one bed to another to save me getting out of bed, and it takes it.

Have been using Acer laptops now far over seven years and i think they are superb and excellent value for money. However Comet have a decent deal on at the moment on a HP model................ under Ł450 iirc.

I've taken my Acer laptop to university everyday for the past 3 years (ie its been knocked, dropped, banged etc) and nothing has ever gone wrong. I'm actually quite surprised about the comments regarding poor build quaility above.

I'm not saying I wouldn't recommend an acer, maybe mine was a friday afternoon build, I don't know. Just saying that my old Dell was a lot better in terms of build
