Default Why dont petrol tanks explode?

If you have an internal fuel pump?
Why is it the tank doesn't explode?

I assume the motors still create a spark?
If the tank is low to empty, why don't they explode ?

Petrol needs a certain amount of air to be combustable, and that certain amount of air isn't present in a sealed tank full of petrol fumes.

Try getting a jerry can of petrol and putting a lighter to it. It won't explode, just burn the fuel out the neck of it!

I pulled an ol 044 pump apart and atleast it looked like that ?
They are the same type of pump, i.e for external or internal use?

I'll take your word for that one
But can't see me wanting to try it !

I've seen a cigar dropped (by accident) into a bowl of fuel, but assumed as it wasn't a spark thats why it didn't ignite
Whereas a elecy pump would have a constant spark, like a spark plug

Totally different. A jerry can only has air present at the neck hence why it only burns the fuel there and doesnt all go up!
A petrol tank DOES have air in, as it is not a sealed unit, it has a breather otherwise it would collapse inwards due to vacuum!

yes mate its complete bollocks its not the fuel that burns its the vapours this is why fuel in an engine is atomised to get combustion

also diesel wagons and buses that explode when crashing on films is bollocks also it just would not happen!

A petrol tank has a breather but it's not an 'open' valve, otherwise all ya petrol would disappear in vapour!

The oxygen content is too low to allow the petrol to ignite.

was a good mythbusters where they kept shooting a petrol tank to try get it to blow up like they do in the movies, took them ages and they had to use tracer bullets in the end to eventually get it to go. Seems to be a lot harded than youd imagine getting petrol to go up!!!

ill never forget my mate dropping his fag in jerry can and me running for my life...

Ill also never forget me pumping fuel out of an old escort with a fuel pump and the whole side of the car going up, my pants too, Running to the garage in my boxers looking for the fire extinguisher whilst my pants are on fire, the car and the pump STILL pumping fuel onto the jerry can, lesson learnt!!

So an empty Jerry can is more dangerous than a full one? Have I got this right? And why won't Diesels blow up?

Your right, but the valve opens as the fuel is being drawn from the tank - hence air entering the tank - when the pump is running!

I guess so Benni as its full of vapours! Thats why it costs a fortune when old petrol stations are sold for building on as the tanks have to be decommisioned - imagine the vapours in those!

air is in the tank yes but the amount that gets into the fuel while being pumped is insufficient to cause ignition

Try having a jar full of petrol and drop a lit match in it. The petrol will extinguish the match.

Try having a jar that has just been emptied of petrol and drop a match in it. More than likely you will get a flash or a little fire.

I'm with you Dojj, and you can add Nitrous Oxide to the list, just like in the F&F film where the cigar lighter ignites the nitrous vapour!

Pure artistic license, or to put it plainly, bullshit

Still be combustant fumes in the tank .. When ever they get welded (Pro) You have to fill the tank with C02 ..

Diesel tanks needs to Be flooded with C02 as well .. Same with Hydraulic and other Oil tanks ..

I've see a Diesel tank being welded still on the truck full of fuel .. You just gotta weld below the fuel level line ..

Yeah... Must be crazy. So can I go and throw a lit ciggy' on the floor at my local garage while shouting 'I'll do it, I'm gonna' end it!' And everyone will panick for nothing? Could be a good April fools this... My local might start turning the pump on at request now.

Take more than a DYSON to do that (Yes even the Fooking new one )

Wonder why they did the test? MM maybe a pressure test incase it goes underwater?

Benni.
No because your local petrol station isn't an open swimming pool of petrol. Theres a lot of petrol vapour's around the pump naturally.
