Default Focus ABS Reluctor Ring Question...

Bit of a strange one coming up here but...

Does anyone have access to a Ford Focus Mk 1.5 rear ABS reluctor ring?

I think it'll only be on 2.0 ESP and ST170 models but don't hold me to that!

Basically i'm trying to assess whether i can splice into the ABS sensor wiring where it enters the ECU to pull a pulsed signal out. I'll then create a custom sensor calibration for my AIM dash and use it to act as a speed sensor.

Problem is, as I understand the Focus setup the reluctor ring is built in to the wheel bearing? As such, until now i've never had reason to want to see one...

Has anyone ever seen one? Used one for a similar purpose? Any info appreciated

I would not recomend you touching the ABS system.

However, there is a road speed signal from the gearbox to the ecu which will provide a suitable signal for the dash and will not introduce any safety issues if there is a problem.

I dont have any information on these connections though.

Hi Simon,

Unfortunately I don't have the Vehicle Speed Sensor on the gearbox anymore, i've got a different final drive in there and it fouled the sensor and so we had to remove it.

What are the potential implications of splicing into the ABS sensor?

Abs not working when you expect or ABS working when you don't expect..

Ah I see !

The ABS module checks the sensor for operating a parameters continuously and splicing may load the signal either permanenty or erratiaclly causing issues with normal operation.

The best way is to build an interface using electronics ....
An operational differential amplifier with high impedance input and current limited inputs is needed to isolate the systems.
(sorry if its over your head)

Another issue is that ther ABS system pulses will be very fast even at a moderate road speed and there may be issues with the dash accepting such a high speed signal but I am no expert on the dash mentioned.
If this is the case, the signal may need digital dividing to reduce this rate.

I would contact your dash makers as they may have an off the shelf solution.

Right on the edge of my knowledge there mate

Well, i've got a couple of other options - there are loads of 'normal' toothed inductor rings on ebay for a tenner, if i can get one to go onto my driveshaft i can mount an inductive sensor to read it and wire that to the dash. Alternatively i can mount a magnetic 'trigger' in place of one of the bell to rotor bolts on my AP brakes and mount an inductive sensor to read that.

I know the dash will read an ABS sensor as there are quite a few people doing it (sadly they don't clarify whether they are still using a 'live' ABS system). It would be a million times easier for me to just splice a signal into the dash though...

Had a thought, it may be possible to drill the hub to fit a second sensor and use that just for the dash leaving the ABS untouched.

I've got a set of rear ABS hubs somewhere I'll look and photo.

Brilliant! Thank you very much mate

In fact, i've actually got a bag of ex-F1 car wheelspeed sensors... might have just found a use for them

Just as a side note, whilst googling i found this thread:

https://passionford.com/forum/techni...t-a-guide.html

Seemingly JJ used an ABS sensor for a speed signal will no ill effects. Even though i do appreciate the 10 year difference in manufacturing...

is it a can signal on the focus ?
we use v box kit at work and have taped in to the abs on a few cars to get wheel speed not had any problems with it
