Default Rosssport/APT Evo Smashes MLR 30-130

Today was the annual MLR 30-130 sprint day and the last few months have seen the evolution of a pretty serious car.

Ross' car in it current guise has an Alloy Rod 2000cc 4G63 engine, with a GT42 turbo and 100 shot of NOS. It made just shy of 900bhp on our very tough DD Dyno last week, at 2.7 bar of boost.

First run out for Ross, as a practice run really, was good, the car looked and sounded fantastic and produced a couple of seemingly good runs, but with no timing gear on board. However, a missed shift saw 11,000rpm, a loose cambelt and probable bent valves.

Game over.

No.

Gary and Chris set about pulling it apart and decided to fit a new cambelt and get the car running again, whereupon it was discovered that it would run, so although the valves were possibly marginally bent, they weren't that bad.

First timed run saw a time of 6.65 seconds, better than Ross' time from last year, but not up to the low 6 second record currently held by Norris Designs Green Evo. Pretty despondant, but knowing that the car had felt so much better before the missed shift, Ross gingerly went out for another go and managed a completely mind-blowing time of 5.84 seconds.

Let's put that into perspective, this car didn't have flat-shift working and has a definate compression issue and still managed to smash the old record by around 1/3 of a second. The car really didn't look or sound as quick as it had on its earlier runs. It has a mid if not low 5 in it yet. Whether or not Ross will try any more remains to be seen.

AWESOME.

What an achievement that is... car just looks SO wrong too...

Just to put this into perspective Christian, what does a Veyron do that in, or hasn't that 30-130 been timed in one of those does anyone know??

sounds and awesome time, but without a scale of reference to go against, i'm not sure we'll know if it's stupendously fast or eyeball wrenchingly fast

Sweet! must be a total weapon

Is that the GT42 pretty much on it's limit BHP wise? my mate's putting one on (GT42R) his RB30, and im sure we reckoned it was good for 850-900ishbhp

Where does that thing make its peak power and what does it rev too? looks a bit of an animal!!

that r32 time of 20 is quick. suprised at monaro.
r32 probably std ish. my rx would do 0-100 in about 15 seconds and that was only maybe 320bhp so 20seconds 30-130 sounds reasonable.

do you hold it at 30mph in second gear and then go for it or are you allready accelerating when you start the clock at 30mph?

that seems a bit slow for a 320hp rx7? my standard m3 does 0-100 in 13.8. would of thought the rx7 was a fair bit lighter?

I thought this was tomorrow, or is there another batch of cars going tomorrow ?

Stunningly fast time. Was the Norris super/turbocharged machine there ? Its bound to have put in some fast times ?

Any other top runners ?

There is another event tomorrow, similar format, but not restricted to just Evo's.

Norris wasn't there, don't know why. I think he was booked. He has supposedly been faster than Ross' time, but unverified by the MLR. It was part of a data-log taken from a Santa Pod run or something. His MLR verified time is around 6.1.

Next fastest was Paul, Neverneverman. 6.8. Another stonking time and a good improvement on his previous best.

I don't really know anything about 3rd place? Wallace Performance prepped car I think?

4th was a lad called Danny, his first time at it, in a car that he only collected from us last week, after a full GT35 build, he managed 7.9, which is another amazing time, considering he has a conventional gearbox.

As for technique, it varies depending on spec. If you have a relatively small/moderate turbo, you can hold the car at 20-25 odd MPH, then left foot brake to build boost. Helps greatly, but these huge turbo's don't allow you to do that, they just can't build boost that low down in that situation, so you just have to nail it.

There really is alot of skill to it. More, IMO, than a standing start.

The popular Evo gearsets don't allow 130mph in 4th (bloody close though, like 125mph), so there is an element of skill in building an engine that can deal with high RPM's, or getting the gearing just right.

Thats pretty mental times

Actually spotted Russ from wallace heading down yesterday while i was driving back up to Abz from Bristol so a quick call confirmed he was en-route to the event.
Did think of doing a 180 and heading back down but dont think the other half would have been that impressed

They should get cars like this on Top Gear to show people what is actually meant by a fast car, joe public thinks a Veyron is the fastest thing on the planet and nothing could ever be faster. Would shut that smug prick Clarkson up too and make for some good TV.

Crazy statistics, would love a run in it.

The car was built very much as an experiment. Ross was quite prepared to sweep it off the dyno in bits and similarly we didn't really know how it would perform or if it would last. It was a steep learning curve for all concerned, but a damn good one and an epic result too.
