so some randomer rings you up, trying to tell you to do this and do that and allow them access to your computer ... She has no problems with her computer ...not now anyway...had she allowed this woman to gain access then that would be a different story im sure!

surely once they have a remote connection they can add and download whatever they like!! and if they catch on to someone who has no idea what they are doing with a computer then they are well away!!

and you'll be supprised at how many do let them gain access and its easier than opening emails so long as they are one you can access there pc providing the firewalls are turned off

but getting that initial remotee connection is not as easy and as quick as it seems.. and even then all they are likely to install is a data logger or key logger which any decent ant virus will detect before it even gets chance to load and reject the download

ah well...at least now the people on here that may not be so computer literate and know and understand all this, or might believe it...or know someone who might wont have this happen as easily now!

But when you turn back on your firewalls and anti virus it will detect it pretty much straight away..
but saying that depends on the anti virus

There's a few scams going about. One is where they phone you up and get you to check your event logs, event the newest install will show errors which to a non-techy might look like they really have a problem. They then try to persuade you to pay them to fix your PC and take out support, actually carried out by a legitimate UK company. They're basically fleecing you into non-existant support.
Another is from an Indian call centre where they say you have exceeded your download limit and try to get credit card details to pay the excess. Most people have the sense top tell 'em to naff orf. (My 76year old mum did!)
You also have the type where they try to get you to download stuff to help fix your PC, as said the downloads are key loggers etc.
They all prey on people ignorance, a bit like an old lady taking a car in for an MOT and them telling her she needs a new woggle-flange and its gonna cost a packet!

Well dodgy if you ask me, and i wouldn't rely on any AV products to detect some particularly malicious software on a machine tbh.
Interestingly enough though, I have known Kaspersky (I think - might have been Symantec!) to do a similar thing for their Anti Virus products - i.e. after several failed updates or a similar issue, a remote chat window appears on your machine asking if you need help, and pending you granting access one of their tech support staff will take a look at your anti virus installation for you.
(IN the case I am thinking of, this was actually done to one of our IT managers who went to extraordinary lengths to verify that this "person" actualyl was who they said they were)
