Default Ford 2.3 Pinto engine- The truth?

Through years of reading magazines I've always learnt that the Ford 2.3 'Lima' engine bears no resembelance to the Pinto/YB block we know and love, but im not so sure its true, infact im growing to think its a load of old bollocks.

(Considering ive seen engines in these Ford expert mags called 2.5 16V Ford Ranger engines and neglected to mention the genius work done to fit a 16V Volvo head to the shitty single cam 2.5 engine, ive grown not to really trust what they say)

I know Wikipedia is generally a load of old bollocks, but this Wiki page seems to say its the same basic block...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Pinto_engine

What i REALLY would like to know is are the mounts the same, ie if a Cossie engine mounts on 2.3 mounts, and vice versa.

I've looked at pics, and the blocks and stuff look similar, but ive yet to find any REALLY clear pics to be sure.

Does anyone know for sure?

Cheers all

While wikipedia isn't always the best source of info. I was always under the impression that the 2.3 and 2.5 where based on the same t88 engine block. However as the engines changed over time it's not to say that various bits where changed.

Ford US (SVO) made a limited number of 2.3 motorsport blocks which had a taller deck and a lot more metal to them, the intention being that 100mm bores and longer strokes would be possible, think they only made around 200 so doubt there are any left, there was also a 16v head but that never made it past being seen in pictures.

The only way to be sure would be to ask the question on a mustang or murker forum as they should now the in's and outs of the blocks and its dimension thus enabling you to work out if bits would fit.

As discussed earlier today, Pinto is an engine family, not a block.

The 2.3 shares no parts with the 2.0 EAO engine we commonly know as the 205, 200 etc. blocks.

Wasn't the pinto name derived from the pinto car in which it first appeared ?

You say "mags" but AFAIK there has only been one mag that has incorrectly identified the engine, and it wasn't Fast Ford.

I presume you're referring to this kinda thing where an 'ordinary' 2.3 Ford engine has a Volvo 16V head and a Cossie inlet manifold, which is allegedly a straight fit!

It is NOT a Bolt on fit there is a hole lot of work to get a Twinky Volvo head on to the LIMA block, But Yes they can get and Do get silly power out of them and the block is solid not like a 200/205 There is nothing that will bolt on to a 200/205 of a LIMA other than a Thermostat and a bell housing only Iv been there . Thanks paul w

Nice to hear about you motor. I know of a Merkur XR4ti that had the motor nicked a few years ago now was it you The Mustang's and Thunder-birds used the same motor as did the Ranger pick up truck Do you know your engine code ?, I can tell you what it should be then and if you get a dial in timing light you should be sorted. Off the top of my head I think it is 34*or 36* @ 3500rpm and you can set the came timing + or - 6* to get low end or high end revs. Give me a day or two and I can sort it for you Any pick's Fella
