i used to have a 996 c2 cab to be honest i hated it juicy, auto box was horrid, roof didnt close correctly
spent loads of money put gt3 skirts on changed the exhaust tips and fitted some nice wheels but still wasnt falling in love with it
but saying that im shining to the 996 turbos and been told the newer tip boxes were better

I researched 996's before buying my e92 m3. The only ones I would touch were the dry sumped ones, which were, 996 turbo, 996 gt3, 995 gt2. The others all seem to suffer from random and catastrophic engine failures. Not sure why the wet sumps have the problem when the dry sumped ones dont but that is the case going by all the stats.

avoid the 3.4 996's as they are the ones that have major engine issues, steve the ones your refering too are the turbos, they are based on the old 964 engine block and not the general 996 engine,,,, the balance shafts have a issue, theres a modded part that sorts this issue but you still have the liner issues aswell as the engine just... well giving up anyway pmsl
nice cars just shame about the 6k engine rebuilds though good thing about porsche cars is that EVERY part is available,,,, and same with gearbox parts and the specialists such as Jazz, and the one that porkie uses near hemel all know there way around cars and not just a buch of school leavers who bought a halfords socket set,,,,, most porsche specialists either sponser a race team or like in the case of Jazz are actually a race team who turned into a garage
3.6 aint a bad car to go for... average running costs tbh but the price of the car reflects that hence the 996 seems a billy bargain,,, but they are all the 3.4,,,, they can be so bad that TVR owners make fun of them pmsl

I had a 99 Carrera 2 for a couple of years. Reliability was very good apart from the alarm going off at random intervals and the windscreen wipers were crap over 90 MPH, and they are no good if you take it to Wales for rally stage recce session, I cracked the sump on the jumps. Handling is like a good tarmac rally car though.

yeah, well i had 6 years with the saff, 5 of them were trouble free fun,
but in the end id made a car that was horrible to use on the road, that was a big part in my choice to break it,
my problem with cossies is i am power mad, which normally means horrible road cars. not sure i want that.i loved my m5 because i could use it everyday

Its just the 996 3.4's tho (first watercooled ) the older 993 are the best but ask silly money but the 3.6 996 turbos a for resonable money now.

As said above the turbo ,gt3 and gt2 use the gt1 based dry sump engine, the normal engines seem to fail more often and the RMS seal goes on them.
Ive had my turbo for nearly a year now and in that time ive had to replace the two outer rads(Ł400) and top up the oil , im getting an average of around 18mpg.
On a side note James can msd mod the maps in these or is it just a generic map that use have. I have stuff to datalog afr,maf,timing...

yeah they seem to do the rads do the turbos and the alternators are another thing,, but thats about all ive been asked for them though ive been asked it alot pmsl, make sure if you get a tiptronic to change the filter and gasket too,,, but any specialist will do that , i cant think of the company that porkie uses,, the partsman there is called Simon but the name has lost me,, he gets ALOT of work and they also know there stuff,,, jazz i also rate but im a bit baised there anyway as they are a nice bunch of lads to have a beer with and a good crack

Yep, I am sure the engines to have are the dry sump, as said above, based on gt1 engine. The rest, I wouldn't touch with a bardge pole unless it had a factory warranty. I will continue to aspire to a less than 3 year old gt3 at some stage but they just cost so much money and using them is a killer for the residual value. So basically puts me off getting one a bit.
