I'd strip any security from the router and try it as an open box. If you still can't get a connect whilst sat right next to it, take everything else off the LAN, and just try the both of them, double-checking the IP's, go back to basics. Delete all the connections, set a new one with no DNS, no nothing, just try and ping the router.

Without knowing more, don't know what else to suggest really.

You don't say much about your settings there, so will be hard to help you. But check DHCP settings on both the router and the adapter. Check the DHCP service is activated on the router, and that the adapter has got "automatically obtain IP address" (or something like this, my Windows has never been in English, so i translate from litteral French ) checked in its properties box.
Also check whether you have WEP enabled or not, because you need to give every adapter the good WEP key (the one that's set on the router) to allow them to connect to it. If you are in a single house and don't fear to share your WiFi with neighbours, you can simple deactivate WEP on the router, will be much simpler if you aren't an expert in networks.

HTH, but can't find your exact prob as you say very few about it

as people said, remove all wep security, check mac authentication, just reset to default the router and try from there

dont use wep

as said above try it with no encryption

also make sure your standing next to the router for best signal strength

once you are connected enable mac filtering on the router and enter the mac of the wireless adaptor that way no one can access your gubbins and you wont get the wep slow bollox
