Default Help with Merc Sprinter!!!

Ran out of diesel yesterday, no problem, had a can and filled her up.

Now it won`t start, drained the battery trying to start, tried the cold start spray but still does`nt start.

Recharged the battery overnight and tried again today, still no joy.

If anyone has any possible solutions, they would be greatly recieved.

I do have breakdown, but the van is 1 minute from home so not sure they`ll come out.

cheers

Tony

Did you let the air out of the system? There must be a handpump somewhere so you can pump until the diesel comes out. Then close it.

Check the fuel filter is full, if not fill it...try it then.

If it still dont fire try just loosening the unions at the injectors just to bleed any air out and try again....if its a new sprinter the alarm/imob might prevent it starting when the bonnet is open like some of the cars do....

Thumbs down

Thanks guys, my garage told me that it should `prime` itself after this happens, I can see an air bubble in a clear fuel pipe.

Theres no fuel getting through at all.

Will tow it in tomorrow morning.

Allmost every diesel needs the air removed. Just look in the instruction man. THink it will say where you can find the hand pump.

sounds like it just needs bleading properly if not that check the seal on the fuel regulator that will stop it running

ther is no bleeder on a sprinter, you need to fill the fuel filter up seperatly & then crack the injectors off all together then nip them up 1 by 1but make sure you nip them up befor you stop turning it over.

had loads of bother with them but doing it this way you will get it away + running out of fuel in a sprinter is not recomended as your finding out there right bastards

cheers nic

dont think there is a hand pump, they self prime, but the fuel filter MUST be full or it wont run. Mine wouldnt run after changing fuel filter, turned over forever and couldnt find hand pump, rang mechanic mate who told me to make sure filter is full, did so and it fired after a few turns...

we use a fuel pump off a cavalier to prime the filter and pump also if the engine is turning slightly to slow it may not start we had this problem on a zafira and it fired with a slave battery fitted

Danny, wheres the filter as I look at the engine bay ? Right in the middle top with 3 lines going into it ? Theres a small screw on top and one on the right hand side, when we took them off no fuel came out.

Is this where we should fill it ??

cheers

Yeah try towing it first. Might take a wee bit to get it going, itll not go on the first try

I know one of the transits doesnt have a hand pump permently installed, on the ford TIS when you change the diesel filter ford have a specialist tool (hand pump) they connect temp to get it going then remove it again after, tho if you fill the new filter up with diesel it starts again fine.

lol. fords special tool is an old hand primer from an early ldv convoy. transits are piss easy to start, just unscrew the top of the filter housing & fill it brim full..

sprinters if you fill the filter briming then use a seringe to brim it full when its fitted crack of the injectors it will start...

Cunt to bleed up.

If you have access to a vacuum bleeder ten you can remove the bleed screw on top of the filter and suck all the air out. Fantastic tool for this kind of shit.

remove the return line form the fuel rail from the filter. furthest toward the back of the engine as u look at from the top & aim it into a container. crank the engine & it should start. reconnect pipe then restart & loosen the bleed screw to get rid of any remaining air.
