Coeliac [Celiac] disease, anyone here suffer?
The missus has had a preliminary diagnosis for Coeliac [or if you're American, Celiac] disease and seeing as this is such a busy site I thought I'd ask if anyone here has it or lives with someone with it?
What does your/their diet now consist of?
Where do you get your gluten free stuff from [bread/pasta etc.] as I've looked around and it's fucking dear!?

go to a Tesco (large one not a small metro) and you will find in the specialist food parts some of the stuff you need.
Great Auntie had it and she used to get some stuff from Marks and Spencer. I'll ask my mother as she used to get her the food.

don't know if we "treat" this sort of stuff at work or not
but
http://www.coeliac.org.uk/members/membership-services
not surehow much it costs to join, but if gives you all you need to know apparently
might be worth the joining up fee

Paddy, my other-half has it mate, it,s not as bad as you,ll both find, sounds really scary when diagnosed, but tell her to join join Celiac UK too mate, really helpful and there,s SO much free foods she,ll get sent. Bread etc is a mare mate, we make our own now with the special flower etc, she,ll not be able to have lager either mate, cider, red wine, some spirits are ok too.
Basically we,ve got something called VILLI inside are stomach and when you,re a Celiac if you eat Wheat or Gluten it knocks these down and causes damage and can cause stomach cancer etc, when sticking to the diet these VILLI build back up BUT you still have to stay on the diet for the rest of your life, bummer a ??
Also Paddy, there,s alot of free-from places now mate, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons etc do all Gluten/Wheat free produts...
Just ask me mate if you need any info??

Do you follow the diet as well? [at home anyway... ]
She's no been properly diagnosed, the blood tests have come back [twice] as her being positive for it but she's having an endoscopy on Thursday. Thanks for the reassurance too mate! and obviously, I'm a fan of free stuff
Neither of us drink but the making bread is a cracking idea!
The way I understand what's going wrong: the Gluten attacks the walls of the intestine [possibly lower, the nurse had big bangers and I wasn't listening to the doctor - translated for Dojj = docrot ] which prevents her being able to absorb alot of vitamins and other things we need. so yes, can lead to the big C in extreme cases, but rickets and other defficiencies are more common?
It was all picked up by her giving blood [she does every 6 months] and they refused due to low iron levels. Hopefully it's been caught at such an early stage!
Our local asda is like a casting couch for a Deliverance remake
Much appreciated, thank you

My old dear has is, and I know she used to get a lot of food stuff delivered, which I think came via the GP, but nowadays she doesn't seem to get a lot of stuff in, if at all. As for bread, she also makes it - we bought her a bread maker thing a few years ago, and she uses it all the time. Far as I can tell, doesn't take long to make the mix, then lob it in and it does it on it's own

Cheers Thrush, as per Staffi's reply I think a bread maker is a fantastic idea! Pretty sure there'll be recipes somewhere on tinterweb!
I buy all my cleaning stuff in Aldi every couple of months, never touched the food due to Tesco being more convenient for a weekly shop, no other reason! Food is food to me, it all comes out the same Thanks for the reply, I'm due some shower cleaner so will have a look
I know it's not the end of the world and a lot worse things happen to other people but she's a bit knocked for six by it so I'm trying to make it as painless as possible and as little a deal as possible so she doesn't get too worried!

I think once you get used to it by remembering makes/names off the foods it would get easier.

My mums got it ive just asked her and she said to join coeliac uk like which has been mentioned already and they said you a book with all the foods in you can eat some things are really funny like your not allowed to eat kellogs corn flakes but you can eat asda's own brand corn flakes so its always best to check.
She also said to check with your gp as you can get some foods on perscription so that can save you afew quid most wont supply treats like biscuits but you can get bread, pasta and other staple foods.
hope that helps mark.

Yeah you can get fresh loaves, rolls, part-baked rolls, pizza bases, different types of pasta, biscuits, mix's for baking with etc etc all on prescription. If shes not exempt from prescription charges she'd be best paying Ł28 for a 3months pre-payment certificate otherwise theyll charge 7.20 an item.

Thank you for all the replies guys and thanks for the very kind offer Dojj!
It's all very much appreciated and there's some great advice!
She's got her endoscopy on Thursday to confirm the diagnosis, so I'll join up on the site mentioned and we'll probably be going to a dietician as part of her treatment.
Thanks again!

I'm going to my mums on Friday so I'll ask her to jot down a few easy to make things, along with recipies for stuff like bread, slef made pizza bases etc if that will help. I'll also ask her if she has one of the Coeliac UK books spare that has lists of brands/stuff you can can't eat. PM me your address and I'll get what I can in the post to you

If she does have any spare I will pay for them and more than cover any costs.
Thank you!

aint read the whole thread but a girl at work suffers from it.
Also found out very recently my twin brother suffers from it , which shit me right up and i had to get checked out - luckily i dont have celiacs but do still suffer from IBS.
You can get food from main tesco and as long as you watch what you eat you will be fine.
some good advice provided above all ready

Genuinely bowled over by the reponses, thoughtfulness and offers of help!
I feel more than inadequate now seeing as my main input to the site is sarcastic replies and a sense of humour that requires inverted commas

It's also a mine of misinformation and as I've said before, for every 10 good topics you have to sift through 10,000 moaning load of bollocks to find anything useful.
I know this is a busy site, thought there'd be people in a similar boat and thankfully was right
Unfortunately, I'm going to have to decline that deal as she's also following this thread

Thank you so much to Thrush for sending through the info and little book
She got a breadmaker for Christmas [I know how to treat a woman] but I've tried half a dozen loaves so far and they've all come out gacking!
Anyone got any tried and tested recipes including ingredients lists [where you got them as well would help]?
So far we've tried a load from the web with and without things like egg, milk, cider vinegar etc etc. I've tried the hovis yeast and then sainsbury's own [on recommendation] and they all come out like bricks!!???

bread making is a bit hit and miss mate, you've got to adjust everyting ever so slightly and even then it might not work
we practiced on one and they would either come out not made at all or they've start leaking out the sides which is why the new one we got remained virtually unsused
