PC Games--Beginners guide
Right then, all i use my PC for is the Internet so i thought i should make more use of it.
I have NEVER played any games on my PC so i think i will start now
I asume there will be a certain spec you need to run games but i bought my PC last year and it is a Compaq Presario, so assume it will be ok
Is it just a case of sticking the Disc in and loading up the games????????
What about controllers??????
I see there is a converter out so you can use your PS2 controller
Any help appreciated

IF your pc is a fast enough spec to run a game then yes you install the game from the cd onto your hard drive (so you will need empty space on your hard drive)
controls will be either be a keys/mouse combo or you can buy a gamepad!

Or, click start, and then run, and type in dxdiag and press enter
Here it will tell you your cpu speed, your memory size, if you click on the display tab at the top, it will tell you your graphic's card manufacturer, and the size of it

Processor: AMD Athlon XP2600+, ~2.1GHz
Memory: 1024Mb (DDR400)
Graphics: 256Mb nVidia GeForce 6800GT
Sound: SoundBlaster Audigy2
Runs Half Life 2 in 1600x1200, with all settings maxed (apart from 4xAA & 8xAF), at 60-100 frames/sec, which is nice!

altho saying that y7ou got the same CPU as me so that gives me hope that my PC will be a bit quicker with a pukka GFX card
(im on a 5200 at the mo)

Yeah, the FX5200 is a proper "budget" card, unfortunately......one of the lads in work got one, and then boasted about it being a better card than my old Ti4600, until he boasted about his 3dmark03 score (mine was about 1000 higher, with my old card
)
)
224mb of ram
i thought ya only get it in 256 or summin like that
and it only looks like a 32mb graphics card
although i might just be reading it wrong
looks a bit like my last pc which was able to play games like return to castle wofenstein on low quality

I'd say upgrade your memory at the same time as your graphics card...
CPU is a bit on the slow side for the newest of games, but it will run them OK with a decent graphics card and a handful of memory.
224Mb would "probably" be a 128Mb, a 64Mb and a 32Mb SDRAM chip, unless it's Windoze reading the amount wrong......whichever way, I'd say to upgrade it to at least 512Mb (1024Mb if you can afford to), but you'd need to check if your motherboard can support 1024Mb if you were going to get that much.

RS2k... 256 minus 224 equals?
the graphics (card) is a biuilt in onboard jobby and shares the system memory...
tiff, that PC wont play anything new (ie made in the past year) without slowing right down...
bit more memory and a good graphic card will sort you out to play most stuff acceptably
go buy yourself a 256mb memory chip and a gfx card that costs about 50quid and you should be ok

I have an AMD 2200+, 512Mb PC3200 DDR and a 256mb XFX Geforce 4 (OC'ed up a bit)
So Tiff, if your motherboard can take it (doubtfull in something like a Compaq to be honest) stick another 256Mb DDR ram in and a decent graphics card and you're away!

Danny, all graphics cards nowaday are AGP.
without getting too techy... this is just a universal slot...
tiffs computer will have an AGP slot (probably with nothing plugged into it as his is currently onboard) it will be the only socket that the card will fit into. (or if it does have a card plugged in, unplug this card and plug in new one)
he simply plugs the card into this socket, and plugs the monitor into the card (ignoring the old monitor connector) and 99 times out of 100 thats it...
worse case scenario you have to disable the onboard card for the new one to work as the primary adapter, but ive never seen a PC that dont do this automatically for you.
als thats left after that is loading on the drivers disk (or do what i do n download the latest drivers off the net, as they get updated very often) and bobs your mothers brother

Jim
it is more than likely tiffs pc WILL NOT have a AGP slot
i am a compaq/hp engineer (as ive now said many times)
if its got an S3 card in it will be an onboard bag of wank in a micro ATX case and will not be upgradeable.
that is 75% likely
if that is the case then tiff you will need to buy a new pc to play nay recent games

this sis my spec
and i run at 1600x1200 in most things on a 21" digital flat CRT (DVi input)
half life 2 has to run at 1024x768 and even get slowdown on need for speed 2 underground 2 with 6 cars in the picutre
ppl may say turn the graphics down but whats the point i play a game i want to see it in all its glory

craig, i thought presarios were slimline desktops not micro jobbies
tiff could always take the case off and take a pic
it only takes seconds to do it
you never heard of GAMEPLAY?
give me a NES with mario3 on it over 90% of modern PC games with super-dooper 3D graphics any day of the week!

why sacrifice looks for gameplay when you can have both
i was gonna upgrade a month ago but now waiting for the new mobos and pci express to see how it goes and will upgrade in the new year

512mb is a good size, any more would really be a bit of a waste on a compaq
