Default Serious Thread ABS

whats the crack with ABS i know what it is and what it does! but would you drive a car without it? if the car came out the factory with it and you disabled it what sort of effect would it take on the brakes and would it be continuous?

the car will be used during dry days and summer months only if they exist! its a focus in question it wont be short of 400hp and it will be tracked but had AP 6 pots and 365mm discs! so what are your views!? how do you stand with cossie conversions on the focus do they have ABS still?

thanks in advance

Ben...

People remove the ABS from RST's (can't remember if its ERST's or FRST's) all the time, supposedly the ABS on them was shocking.

Dunno if that helps in any way.

you'd probably have to check the pressure and bias etc but thats well out of my area of expertise.

somebody on here will know. its quarter to 2 in the morning don't forget^^

s2 rs turbo abs is bad as its mechanical hence why it gets removed by alot of owners

if you dont have abs the brakes will only lock up if YOU allow them to and if they do you just come off the brakes for a sec then back on them, just like a rwd car without traction control will get the back end out if YOU provoke it, so you hold the power and dont back off

its all about driver control, if you dont feel safe without it then dont remove it

Yeah alot of track dayers find ABS intrusive as it takes away some control from the driver, and comes in too early on alot of systems, I think this is the main reason why people remove/disable it.

Ben,

I did track days in my Focus on my old 300mm Wilwoods and even though i didn't feel overly confident with those brakes, i didn't find the ABS an issue.

But i am looking in to putting it on a switch as part of my current build in case i find it a problem on the 362mm AP 6 pots.

I over use the abs on my track car, It doesn't like it and can switch off after about 15 mins of a session, I am heavy on my brakes on track and much prefer to have the abs on.
wore out to the metal a set of brand new dS2000 pads in 2 days at croft this year lol

if your are to take your ABS off i'd make sure you practice your braking, i.e locking the wheels up and letting go, cos if you panic and just hold the brakes on you could cause yourself some unwanted problems, i think new abs is supposed to be alot better but with the older cars human skill can result in better braking.

The ABS on the Escort and Fiesta RS Turbo is shockingly poor. I ripped it out of my S2 and my brothers FRST. Definately improved things.

Personaly I'm not big on driver aids, I'm driving the car, I'm in control not a computer and I'm happiest that way. On the flip side though modern ABS is pretty damn impressive. I won't be removing it from my A4 but do intend on adding a switch so it can be shut out should I want to

Nowt wrong with Sierra ABS. Not as molly-coddling as modern ABS.

is it only there to prevent a slide? i have only ever had it kick in on my old zetec-s and that was in the rain on an emergency stop! didnt like the fact it made the car stop over a longer distance than i wanted it too, and took over my driving i tend to pump the brakes well driving anyway when braking from high speeds

One thing to be aware of, if you intend to remove it, it has to be 100% removed as any trace of the abs having been there to start with will cause a mot fail for non functioning, but if there is no evidence it has been fitted to start with they can't fail it.
I had this very conversation recently with mot man, that was his opinion.

This does ring a bell and I'm sure it's something that has been discussed on here before

Well I no longer have a light as I use a race technology dash now! So the cables will be there along with the servo that all the lines run through! But without a dash the not would have no indication as to weather it's working or not I would say? The mot tester is my cuz anyways

I don't think I would notice it's gone to be honest! As I have never had it kick in! Just wanderd if the brakes would differ from it not being there! If I'm on track going 120mph into a corner and I pump the brakes I shouldnt have a problem should I? But if I hit them and hope then there's a chance they could lock up and I would have to pump them yeh? The focus rs doesn't have traction control so it's a system only aiding the brakes I would say?

sounds like you need to learn to drive properly before you disable the abs. why are you pumping the brakes?

personally, on a modern car i would only ever disable it if driving on snow/ice

that reminds me my ABS light has come on in my dash in my Ashtray - was pretty fun approaching a roundabout a bit too quick dabbed the brakes and we were 90 degrees to the round - bit of opposite lock and dropped down to second and the Ashtray chugged away as it nothing happened - the picture on my mates face was priceless
