You could try taking the cable inner out and greasing it, then wipe away grease, it will still have enough left on it to lube it, they usually do this as the cable gets dry and starts winding up then releasing.

i had the same problem with the speedo on my cossie. i took the clocks out and had a look at the mechanism behind the speedo. Had a fiddle around with the worm gear which moves the odometer numbers, and made sure the little cogs were engaging properly, that sorted out a treat.

Happened to a friend of mine on his honda, as above, he ran thin oil down the cable which did sort it, however about a year later it started doing it again, so he bunged a new cable on, and its been fine for the last 4 years!
